- Inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, repairing and modifying a wide range of farm equipment, light and heavy vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment and special purpose research equipment of an agricultural research facility.
- Oversees and supervises the work of staff, plans, assigns and allocates tasks; ensures staff understand and accomplish assigned tasks; demonstrates work methods and techniques and provides detailed explanations or instructions to meet work goals and priorities; ensures the progress of work; motivates staff to meet established quality and safety standards; and appraises employee performance.
- Plans and implements a preventive maintenance program encompassing inspecting, testing and servicing vehicles, tractors and agricultural research equipment in a timely and cost efficient manner.
- Responsible for inventory and maintenance record keeping related to vehicles, tractors, grounds and farm equipment.
- Ensures work is performed in accordance with procedures and guidelines and workplace compliance to occupational health and safety requirements

The Ottawa Research and Development Centre is one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network of 20 research centres. It is located on the historic Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa.
The Centre conducts research in the areas of crop development, genomics, biodiversity and integrated pest management.
The Mechanical Unit supports the research by maintaining and repairing a large fleet of tractors, vehicles and specialized agricultural equipment.
The immediate need is to staff one indeterminate position.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

A secondary school diploma.
Possession of an Interprovincial Journeyperson’s Automotive Service Technician Trade Certification or a Truck and Coach Service Technician Trade Certification.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of agricultural/farm related equipment.
Experience working in an agricultural research setting.
Experience in supervising a team and organizing a workload with changing priorities.
Previous employment as a professional mechanic with *recent hands on experience in the following areas: automobiles, light trucks or agricultural equipment repairs.
*Recent means the experience was gained no more than two years in the past.
Bilingual - Imperative (BBB/BBB)

College diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in welding, automobile air conditioning or ABS brakes diagnostics OR a certificate from a recognised post-secondary institution in a field related to the position being filled.
A Class D or Class A Driver’s license with air brakes endorsement.
Experience in welding and metal fabricating techniques.
Experience in maintaining research seeders, planters, plot combines and other small research equipment.
Experience in planning, organizing and prioritizing activities.
Experience using a computer for emails, garage management programs and vehicle repair manuals.
