Duties
The successful candidate(s) will develop expertise, create knowledge and conduct research in support of the Canadian Armed Forces. This includes planning and executing experimental research activities, such as laboratory tests and field or sea trials, as well as developing and applying custom and commercial hardware and/or software for scientific modeling, data collection and analysis. In addition to the execution of longer term research projects, they will provide scientific consulting services and recommendations to the Canadian Armed Forces.
The successful candidate(s) will report their research results through reports, peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, verbal presentations and briefings. They will monitor worldwide developments in science and technology in order to identify and assess trends in their field of research. They will also be involved in formulating, implementing and managing large research projects and support contracts with industry.
In carrying out the research program, the successful candidate(s) will supervise and provide guidance to technical staff, contractors and students. They will also participate in national and international scientific meetings and conferences.
Work environment
You will work in the Dockyard Laboratory (Atlantic) located in Halifax, a section of the DRDC Atlantic reseach center.
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is the national leader in defence and security science and technology.
As an agency of Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND), DRDC provides DND, the Canadian Armed Forces and other government departments as well as the public safety and national security communities, the knowledge and technological advantage needed to defend and protect Canada’s interests at home and abroad.
Immediate need will be to fill 2 indeterminate position.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures (term, indeterminate, deployment, assignment, secondment)
Stream 1– Acoustic Properties of Materials, where the successful candidate will conduct research in the domain of acoustic properties of materials with the goal of predicting and reducing the acoustic signature of naval platforms. The research must take into account the eventual integration of the acoustic materials to military platforms along with the associated physical constraints.
Stream 2– Electromagnetic Interaction with Matter, where the successful candidate will conduct research in the domain of electromagnetic interaction with matter (RF, microwave, millimeter-wave or infrared spectrum) with the goal of reducing the signature of military platforms and to protect platforms against future threats. The research must take into account the eventual integration of the EM materials to military platforms along with the associated physical constraints.
