EDUCATION:
Graduation with a Master of Science (MSc) degree from a recognised post-secondary institution with a specialization in chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, computational modelling, or some other specialty relevant to the position(s) coupled with acceptable experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience implementing and conducting laboratory or field experiments for a research project or study.
Experience analysing data.
Experience documenting, producing and presenting technical reports in a research environment.
Experience in one or more of the following:
Chemical, Biological or Radiological (CBR) hazards
Aerosol sciences
Modelling

ASSET EDUCATION:
Graduation with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from a recognised post-secondary institution with a specialization in physical or applied sciences or some other specialty relevant to the position

Degree equivalency

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
For all streams:
Experience solving complex problems in a science and technology environment
Experience conceiving and employing innovative ideas leading to solutions of problems.
Experience managing multiple elements in a project(s) in a science and technology environment.

Stream 1 – Radiological Assessment Scientist
Experience in radiological or nuclear analytical techniques e.g. Dosimeters, radiation spectroscopy.
Experience in the use of hand-held radiation detection systems.
Experience in the quantification and assessment of radiological or nuclear hazards.

Stream 2 –Applied Systems Scientist
Experience in the design or development of miniature autonomous systems.
Experience in the application of autonomous systems to transport or disperse hazardous materials.

Stream 3 –Protection against Hazards Scientist
Experience conducting research and analysis in a laboratory or field setting to protect against Chemical, Biological or Radiological (CBR) hazards.
Experience with materials to protect against Chemical, Biological or Radiological (CBR) hazards (e.g. material sciences, polymer or synthetic chemistry for developing protective materials in extreme environments).

Stream 4 – Applied Modelling Scientist
Experience writing computer code for engineering or scientific research applications.
Experience in the application of theoretically or physically-based computational models to analyse complex interactions of materials.

Stream 5 – Aerosol Physicist/Scientist
Experience conducting aerosol tests on materials or filters with solid or liquid aerosols.
Experience with equipment to generate (monodisperse or polydisperse distributions of liquid or solid aerosols) and quantify aerosols for studies in a laboratory or field environment.
Experience using computational fluid dynamics methods to study complex air flow patterns or aerosol interaction in the environment or with filter media.

Stream 6 – Decontamination Scientist
Experience developing multi-step synthetic pathways to produce or neutralise toxic chemicals and their precursors.
Experience using analytical techniques like Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), GC/MS and LC/MS or other to monitor synthesized chemicals, precursors and degradation products.

Stream 7 – Spectroscopy Scientist
Experience in the use of spectroscopic methods to detect chemical or biological material at proximal distances in the environment.
Experience in the application of spectroscopic results to assess contamination of materials.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be willing and able to perform work that is physically demanding and repetitive in nature.
Must be willing and able to work in a field setting (non-laboratory), including in adverse weather conditions.
Must be willing and able to work in a setting where animal models are utilised by researchers and other personnel for experimental and training purposes.
Must successfully complete training in basic first aid and advanced emergency medical training.
Must be willing and able to obtain and retain a DND 404 licence.
Must be willing and able to work overtime, including weekends.
Must be willing and able to travel for government business several times per year for periods possibly in excess of 1 week at a time.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Must be willing to obtain and retain a Secret (Level II) security clearance.
Must be willing to obtain and retain a HPTA (Human Pathogens Toxins Act) security clearance if required.
Must be willing and able to wear a full military or first-responder personal protective ensemble for extended durations of at least 4 h in the laboratory or field.
Must undergo and pass employment medical assessments.
