Duties

The Aboriginal Liaison Officer is responsible for interpreting and communicating Aboriginal offender behaviour, treatment needs and progress to the case management team for inclusion in correctional/healing plans to promote the safe release of Aboriginal offenders and to reduce the recidivism rate. The ALO will develop and deliver Aboriginal orientation programs, establish a positive Aboriginal cultural environment in the institution, and assist Aboriginal Elders with various parts of writing and implementing the Elder Reviews/Healing Plans.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to fill similar vacancies of various tenures (e.g.indeterminate, term, casual etc.) with Correctional Service of Canada in the Atlantic Region.

EDUCATION

Degree from a recognized university or acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience in the traditional, cultural and spiritual practices of Aboriginal teachings and values.
Experience working with Aboriginal Elders.
Experience in using a computer including word processing software such as Microsoft Word and WordPerfect.
*Significant experience working with or for Aboriginal communities and organizations.
*Significant experience is defined as a minimum of two years.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate Aboriginal cultural events such as traditional and/or spiritual ceremonies, social activities and programs.
Ability to work with and support Elders, respecting traditional protocols and values, particularly as they relate to Elders.
Ability to manage, support, and motivate people individually and/or within group settings.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.

EXPERIENCE

Experience working with Aboriginal people in conflict with the law.
Experience with Correctional Service Canada.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of interviewing and counselling techniques.
Knowledge of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (CCRA) pertaining to Aboriginal People.

ABILITIES

Ability to speak a traditional Aboriginal language of a territory.
