Facility Maintenance Mechanic

Work environment

The incumbent will be required to travel on a regular basis to various Arctic locations (such as the Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP)’s facility in Resolute, Nunavut) for several cycles of approximately 6 weeks each during the year.

Intent of the process

A pool of (fully or partially) qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.)), various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

A secondary school diploma and occupational certification in a building trade or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment in institutions with mechanical, electrical, and energy management systems.
Experience in light construction or renovations.
Experience in the safe operation of a variety of shop tools.
Experience with Building Automation Systems.
Experience in air distribution systems as related to modern air conditioning systems.
Experience in the maintenance of pumps.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of fire safety equipment including sprinkler systems and other automatic fire suppression systems.
Experience in reading and performing tasks outlined in technical manuals and/or publications.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration units or auxiliary pumps or re-circulation systems or electric motors or HVAC auxiliary equipment.
Knowledge of the applicable preventative maintenance procedures of mechanical systems.
Knowledge of the operation of generator power systems.
Knowledge of the operation of heating boilers.
Knowledge of the operation of chemical treatment of hot water systems.
Knowledge of heating and cooling controls including pneumatic systems.

Ability to perform running maintenance, repair and troubleshoot various types of equipment such as fans, pumps and controls.
Ability to read and interpret sketches and blueprints.
Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Possession of a valid Electrician certification.
Possession of a valid oil burner technician certificate or gas fitter certificate.
Possession of a valid HVAC/Refrigeration Technician.
Possession of a valid millwright certification.
Possession of a valid journeyman plumber certification.
Possession of a Heavy Equipment Operators certificate.

Experience working in an isolated post.
Experience in troubleshooting electrical faults, with a thorough knowledge of operating generator and UPS power systems.
Experience in maintaining inventory and maintenance records.
Experience in ordering parts, materials and tools for facility related repairs.

Willing and able to work in isolated high-Arctic locations for extended periods of time.
Willing and able to work long hours and overtime, including work on week-ends.
Willing and able to travel to various locations in the Arctic on a regular basis.
Willing and able to undergo periods of intense/high-pressure activity.
Willing and able to work on ladders and at heights.
Willing and able to work in tight, cramped and/or confined spaces.
Willing and able to lift 25 kg (50 lbs).
Willing and able to use personal protective equipment
