This position will be leading subordinate staff and conducting maintenance activities, planting and maintaining flower beds, lawns, shrubs and trees of grounds and gardens care. The incumbent will be operating vehicles such as trucks, tractors, riding lawn mowers, gators etc., as well as operating hand and power tools associated with horticulture. The duties will also include the application of biological and chemical pesticides and fertilizers and snow removal.
Agriculture Agri-Food Canada maintains the 427 Hectares of property that make up the National Historic site of the Central Experimental Farm, the farm in the middle of the city. This property is home to the Dominion Arboretum, Ornamental Gardens, Ottawa Research and Development Centre as well as the Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum. The site is visited by millions of tourists each year and is used as a learning location for many local students. As an active research centre it also draws the interest of scientists and students from all over the world for learning and collaborations.
Immediate need: To staff a Leadhand, Ornamental Gardens position (Bilingual Imperative (BBB/BBB)) on a full time permanent basis.
Anticipatory: A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent full-time or part-time basis or on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for the locations indicated for this process.
In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

Successful completion of secondary school OR an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
Experience in applying horticultural practices related to herbaceous plants and annual plant material.
Experience in leading and organizing a group of workers.
Experience in using computer software such as word processing, database and email programs.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of horticultural/farm related equipment
Bilingual - Imperative (BBB/BBB)
Information on language requirements
Knowledge of the characteristics of herbaceous plants, annual flowers and woody plants.
Knowledge of modern horticultural practices and plant maintenance.
Knowledge in planning and designing gardens and flower beds.
