Duties

The incumbent of this position may be required to perform the following duties once appointed to the position.

• Performs routine inspections, scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs of: o A 164 kW dual ice surface ammonia refrigeration plant
o 16 remote oil and gas fired boiler plants and ancillary equipment aggregating 6735 kW of low pressure steam and hot water.
o A cogeneration facility aggregating 61898 kW of high pressure steam and low temperature hot water.
• Performs chemical treatment operations by:
o Performing standardized chemical testing of softened water, cooling tower water, boiler water, hot water heating fluid, condensate and glycol.
o Determining the treatment needed and adding the required chemicals to maintain all fluid systems in good condition.
o Carrying out corrective measures to restore fluid condition such as cleaning and changing filters, draining off excess fluid to lower concentrates.
• Assists in the operation, maintenance, and continuous monitoring of all equipment by:
o Starting and stopping a variety of equipment to maintain sufficient heat and hot water to base buildings.
o Opening and shutting valves, making fine adjustments to valves and electronic controllers.
o Checking equipment for unusual noise, vibration or heat.
o Compiling records/logs of plant data such as temperatures, pressures, tank levels, vibration, voltages, amperage etc.
o Maintains Heating Plant safety and efficiency through good housekeeping and monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
o Monitoring gas detectors when working as a safety person in a confined space

Intent of the process

There is an immediate need to staff one (1) indeterminate position in Petawawa, Ontario. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions.

Occupational Certification:
OC1 - Possession of a valid Third Class Stationary Engineer's Certificate for the Province of Ontario or possession of a valid Third Class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate from another province with interprovincial certification.

Experience:
EX1 - *Recent and **significant experience with the operation of boilers, equipment pertaining to the boilers and auxiliary equipment
EX2 - *Recent and **significant experience with the control for steam, water and condensate systems.

*Recent is defined as within the last five (5) years.
**Significant is defined as the depth and breadth learned having two (2) cumulative years of experience.

• Eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain a Departmental driver’s license (DND 404).
• Possession of a valid Class “G” driver’s license without restrictions issued by the Province of Ontario or provincial equivalent Willingness to work Shift Work (12 hours)
• Willing and able to work overtime
• Work in confined spaces, climb stairs; work from ladders, scaffolding and elevated platforms.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety requirements, policy or regulations.
