Work environment

Work is performed in a police environment where there are inherent stresses and distractions from unruly prisoners and significant exposure to unsettling and graphic crime scene photographs and reports when transcribing court documents or recorded incidents or complaints. There is possible exposure to communicable diseases carried by prisoners detained at the Detachment.
There are constant interruptions in order to respond to requests for service or information from the general public. Occasionally there are disagreeable interactions with external clients such as witnesses, victims, accused and suspects, and complainants, who are at times confused, fearful, hostile, or in shock about a situation or circumstance (missing child, assault, emergency situations). There is a requirement to be in the detachment office alone, when police officers are on patrol or off duty.
The work requires exposure to numerous and conflicting deadlines, multiple demands, time pressures, and changing priorities. There is a requirement to operate a personal computer for long periods resulting in possible eye strain and physical stresses. Effort is required to lift and carry boxes (up to 20kg) of equipment/supplies for short periods of time. Protective gloves may be required to handle exhibits or unsafe material such as mail, flares, ammunition
