Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative), various language requirements and profiles (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.)), various security requirements (reliability, secret), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Technical diploma in a field related to the position, such as: mechanics, electricity, refrigeration.

Degree equivalency

A valid class 1 refrigeration system (RS-1) certificate, Emploi Québec – ministère du Travail, de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MTESS), or a valid journeyman Certificate of competency – Refrigerationist issued by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ).

Recent* and significant** experience in the maintenance and operation of office buildings or scientific research facilities.

Experience in: refrigeration as related to building maintenance or the upkeep of scientific equipment.

Experience in maintenance of refrigeration systems and controls, HVAC equipment, and backup generators.

Experience in drawing up recommendations with respect to cost estimates, decisions concerning component replacement and repair, as well as acceptance of the work completed.

Experience in inspection work and log maintenance.

Experience in the supervision of contractors and sub-contractors.

* Recent: Five consecutive years of work experience within the last eight years .

**Significant: Executing a series of tasks of various kinds and levels of complexity.

Practical knowledge of how building cooling systems work.

Knowledge of the general principles of health and safety.

Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations, such as the standards established by the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

Ability to assess and perform repairs on HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning).

Ability to read construction plans and drawings.

Ability to inspect a building.

Ability to lift and move objects, materials, and equipment in a safe and suitable manner.

Ability to communicate effectively face-to-face.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Good judgment;

Degree from a college or recognized institution in a program of at least two years in building service and maintenance.

Degree equivalency

A valid class 1 refrigeration system (RS-1) certificate, Emploi Québec – ministère du Travail, de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MTESS), or a valid journeyman Certificate of competency – Refrigerationist issued by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ).

Experience using a computerized preventive maintenance system on a regular basis. This includes: entering maintenance action requests, correcting errors, printing reports, etc.

Experience in plumbing, electricity, or building systems in connection with the functioning and maintenance of a laboratory or scientific environment.

Experience using a direct digital control system (DDC).

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid Quebec Class 5 driver’s licence.
Ability to lift over 50 lb.
Willingness to respond to emergency calls to work outside normal hours.
Willingness to be on call (rotational basis).
Willingness to work overtime.
Physical ability to climb up and down a ladder, as well as to work inside or outside closed spaces or confined areas.
Wearing required personal protection equipment.
