Immediate staffing requirements: There is one (1) GL-MAN-04 (indeterminate seasonal) position to be staffed in French Village/Mactaquac, NB. A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff the same or similar positions with various tenures within DFO Maritimes Region at the following locations: New Brunswick (French Village/Mactaquac) and Nova Scotia (Coldbrook, New Germany).

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a technical or science program at a recognized trade school or community college or completion of secondary school (high school diploma) and at least two years of relevant training and experience (such as working in a trade, aquaculture experience, or environmental biology experience).
EXPERIENCE:
For positions at the GL-MAN-04 and GL-MAN-05 group and level:
- Significant (at least 2 years) experience undertaking general maintenance of structures and equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, pressure washers, other gas powered equipment, repairing damaged wooden structures)
- Experience designing and building basic structures using tools, such as a table saw, circular saw, mitre saw, and drill
- Experience using computers and software, such as word processing programs, internet browser and email applications
PLUS, for positions working at the GL-MAN-05 group and level:
- Experience using equipment and troubleshooting problems without supervision and other colleague support
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in an environmental or biological field
- Experience working with or being responsible for the care of live animals
- Experience in the capture of fish through a variety of techniques (e.g. fishway traps, seines, nets, traps, electrofishing, rotary screw traps)
- Experience with handling and collecting biological samples from wild Atlantic salmon (e.g. adults, smolts and juveniles)
- Experience in the care, handling and rearing of fish (such as anaesthetizing, sampling, grading, vaccinating, tagging, sorting and spawning)
- Experience transporting live fish
- Experience in operating a tractor with a forklift attachment, or a forklift
- Experience in operating a truck with a hydraulic boom
- Experience with the collection and recording of data
- Experience using GPS (global positioning system) devices and their applications
- Experience working with industry or non-governmental organizations on collaborative projects

KNOWLEDGE:
For positions at the GL-MAN-04 and GL-MAN-05 group and level:
- Knowledge of necessities of life for aquatic animals.
- Knowledge of the operation and minor routine maintenance of infrastructure and equipment (e.g., pumps; spray washers; plumbing).
- Knowledge of safe working procedures in an environment that includes work around open and unguarded water (e.g. open ponds, such as those present at Mactaquac and unguarded water in the field)
ABILITIES:
For positions at the GL-MAN-04 and GL-MAN-05 group and level
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

- Ability and willingness to work in and around water, including moving water
- Ability and willingness to work in areas 3-10 m above the ground or water
- Ability, willingness and physical capability to lift packages (such as bags of salt or fish feed) that weigh up to 20 kg and to handle up to 300 fish that weigh 2 kg - 10 kg, daily, for several days at a time
- Reliability Status Security Clearance
- Ability and willingness to work weekends and overtime as required
- Ability and willingness to travel for work as required
- A valid Health Canada Medical meeting the criteria for scientific personnel in the field and electrofishing (for identified positions) will be required.
PLUS
For positions working at the GL-MAN-05 group and level:
- Valid Class 3E driver’s license (with air brake endorsement)
- Health Canada Medical meeting the criteria for scientific personnel in the field
