Duties

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The Nurse-In-Charge (NIC) provides leadership and collaborates in the delivery of comprehensive health programming which includes promoting, protecting and preserving the health of First Nations living on reserve. In partnership with community members and leaders, programs are designed to promote environments that support optimum health.

The NIC will be responsible to lead and coordinate a dynamic team that may consist of the following areas of practice:

Public Health – responsibilities such as communicable disease control, well child clinics, pre-natal and post-natal programs, school health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention

Home and Community Care – responsibilities such case management, chronic disease management, wound care, post-operative care

Primary Care – provides access to primary care (urgent, non-urgent and emergent care) in consultation with Nurse Practitioners and/or Physicians.

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Health Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people. Graduation with a degree* in nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution.

*A baccalaureate or higher level degree, as established by educational authorities.

Degree equivalency

Current registration as a registered nurse in the province or territory of employment and a member in good standing in that province and willingness and eligibility to become registered, at the time of appointment, in the province where the position is located.

Recent and Significant* experience as a Registered Nurse in the practice areas of Community Health (Primary Care, Public Health, and/or Home and Community Care).

and/or

experience as a registered nurse in leadership roles (such as managing a project, leading a program, leading a team, etc.) in Community Health (Primary Care, Public Health, and/or Home and Community Care).

*Recent and Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with full time performance of duties for a minimum period of 3 years combined within the last 5 years.

A Master’s degree in Nursing or a field related to health.

Experience working with First Nations communities

Operational Requirements:

Travel to rural and/or remote locations on gravel roads or in small aircraft
CPR Certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C (renewed annually)

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

A medical clearance is required
Possession of a valid driver’s licence
Continuous professional registration and a member in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
