Duties

Under the supervision of a research scientist from the Meteorological Research Division, the employee will carry out research and development projects in physical ocean modelling coupled to weather numerical prediction models. Models used on high performance IT infrastructure.

He/she will carry out the following activities:
• Through research and development, contribute to the development of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s numerical ensemble environmental prediction systems.
• Through research and development, improve Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Lagrangian drift modelling capacity.
• Evaluate the performance of environmental forecasting systems.
• Collaborate with scientists participating in related research and development projects.
• Provide external collaborators with technical support and advice.
• Write peer-reviewed scientific articles and prepare scientific documents for publication in the form of in-house technical notes and presentations.
• Collaborate with programmers, research assistants and meteorologists to ensure follow-up on implementations in the weather and environmental forecasting systems.

Expected level of performance
• Provision of scientific knowledge, computer code changes, written reports and scientific articles on ensemble forecasting and Lagrangian drift modelling using Environment and Climate Change Canada’s environmental forecasting systems on high-performance supercomputers in order to meet the objectives of applications of these systems.

Intent of the process

To fill two positions in Dorval, Quebec. The pool of qualified candidates may be used for similar positions within Environment and Climate Change Canada (Dorval or Toronto), with various tenures (e.g. indeterminate, term, assignment, secondment), language requirements and profiles, and conditions of employment.

**Education:

Graduation of a doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in natural sciences, with a specialization in physical oceanography or in a related discipline to the position.

Abilities / Skills

Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).

Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

Experience

• Experience in projects related to the development of numerical physical ocean models;
• Experience in publishing articles in physical oceanography in peer-reviewed scientific journals;
• Experience in using observations for the purposes of model analysis or verification.

• Significant *experience in coupling environmental models (for example: atmosphere, ocean, ice, waves, hydrology);
• Experience in adapting and optimizing computer codes for various types of computing platforms (examples: supercomputers, Linux cluster).
• Experience in using software developed by Environment and Climate Change Canada (examples: RMNLIB, EDITFST, PGSM, XREC, EDITBRP).

*Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience generally acquired in the full-time performance of the duties for a minimum of 5 years

Asset Qualifications

Knowledge

• Knowledge of issues related to hazardous aquatic spills;
• Knowledge of the utility and added value of ensemble forecasts.
