Duties

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is looking for motivated and experienced people interested in an opportunity to make a real difference by working directly with northern communities, businesses, and territorial government to develop and fund projects that will have a direct impact on the economic development and prosperity of the North, its communities, and its welcoming and resourceful residents!

CanNor works to develop a diversified, sustainable and dynamic economy across Canada’s three territories. The CanNor Operations sector delivers a suite of programs that directly impact Northerners’ lives, and funds a multitude of projects ranging from clean technology (solar panels, wind farms, biomass), to mining and resource development, to Indigenous entrepreneurs and small business start-ups, to local community and territorial infrastructure.

Duties of the positions to be filled may include:

• Reviewing and evaluating funding proposals/projects related to Economic Development in the North
• Negotiating with applicants, developing recommendations, and providing advice to senior management
• Building and maintaining relationships with local communities, businesses, and municipal/territorial/federal government departments.
• Developing tools, guidelines, and providing advice and guidance on the delivery of contributions programs in a northern economic development context

Work environment

Established in August 2009, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is the only federal department with an exclusive mandate for the North. The headquarters of CanNor are located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. CanNor also has regional offices in Yukon and the Northwest Territories, and a liaison office in Ottawa.

CanNor's vision is to develop a strong, diversified, sustainable and dynamic economy for Northerners and Indigenous people, communities and businesses across Canada's three Territories. As the smallest of the Government of Canada’s five regional development agencies (less than 100 staff in total), CanNor provides a unique opportunity for individuals looking to be part of a small but mighty organization that leverages its nimbleness to tackle some serious, high-profile socio-economic issues!

In short, this is definitely not just another boring old desk job!! This is a rewarding opportunity for motivated and resourceful individuals to make a real difference in the economic and social wellbeing of northern residents; by working directly with communities and businesses, and witnessing first-hand the results of the government’s investments!
