Work environment

The Department of National Defence (DND) is the largest federal government employer, offering over 70 different types of civilian career opportunities. The individual will be working within the Transportation section of the Base Logistics branch at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt. CFB Esquimalt is primarily a naval base that employs around 4,100 military members and 2,500 civilian personnel. Under Base Logistics’ mission to provide logistics support to successfully enable clients’ capabilities, the Transportation section provides mobile support services for CAF operations in the Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) region, which spans the southern area of Vancouver Island.

Essential Education:
Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Essential Occupational Certification:
A valid BC Class 1 Driver's Licence with no restrictions and with Air Endorsement or provincial/territorial equivalent.

An acceptable clean driver’s abstract documenting the past five years of driver’s history.

Essential Experience:
Ex1 - Approximately 3 years of experience in professional driving of tractor trailers.

Ex2 - Experience in supervision.

Ex3 - Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications, such as Excel, Word and Outlook.

Ex4 - Approximately 2 years of experience in operating heavy equipment.

Ex5 - Experience in liaising with management both internal and external to an organization.

Asset Certification:
Canada Safety Council Defensive Driving Course (DDC) certificate.

DDC Instructor certificate.

Clear Language Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate.

Safety Supervisor certificate.

Other leadership or supervisory training relevant to the position.

Asset Experience:
AEx1- Experience in using a Fleet Management System.

AEx2 - Experience supervising staff in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat Collective Agreements.

AEx3 - Experience in operating a crane.

AEx4 - Experience in operating an Air Brake System, Materiel Handling Equipment, buses, or a refuelling truck.

AEx5- Experience in handling and tying down loads on vehicles or trailers.

AEx6 - Experience with Government of Canada transportation policies.

AEx7 - Experience in applying road maintenance principals and standards.

A2- Ability to carry out and operate the daily inspections of heavy equipment and identify equipment malfunctions.

A4- Ability to follow direction effectively.
A5- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently.
A6- Ability to effectively supervise.

Operational Requirements:
• Required to wear CSA approved safety footwear and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as directed.
• Required to work in inclement weather conditions.
• Required to work standby, overtime and occasionally on weekends and holidays.
• Required to perform physically demanding tasks including safely lift 20 Kg, bend, climb stairs and climb into heavy equipment.
• Required to be mobile within the CFB Esquimalt area of responsibility. ie: CFB Esquimalt (Victoria, Rocky Point (Metchosin) and Nanoose Bay (Nanaimo).

Conditions of employment

• Security clearances: Various (including: reliability and secret).
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Military Driver's Licence (DND 404).
• Required to perform physically demanding tasks including safely lifting 20 Kg, bending, climbing stairs and climbing into heavy equipment.
• Acceptable Driver's Abstract dated no more than 30 days prior to the appointment date.
• Must possess a valid BC Class 1 Driver's Licence with no restrictions and with Air Endorsement or provincial/territorial equivalent.
• Valid provincial medical completed by a physician authorizing the operation of vehicle classes included in BC Class 1 Driver’s License.

Other information

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates must clearly demonstrate in the screening questions how they meet the education and experience factors listed as essential qualifications.
