Duties

Key Activities:

Water Resources Engineers at all levels remain focused on data collection, analysis and timely dissemination of water resources information. The incumbent must understand the broad scope of water resources engineering, and engage in scientific and technical analysis and evaluation of issues regarding water resources including the application of existing and emerging technologies. The ENG-03 and 04 must additionally be able to work independently and plan projects, while the ENG 04 must be able to supervise staff and manage overall delivery within a program area.

Hydrometry and Hydraulics

Assist with the collection, processing, interpretation, correction, summarization and presentation of water resources data to improve the understanding of water resource systems and provide advice on deficiencies and propose updates and modifications as necessary to improve hydrometric monitoring approaches

Apply hydraulic and hydrologic principles to the collection and interpretation of water resource data and information.

Investigate and evaluate new and/or alternative technologies that can be used to improve the measurement of hydraulic and hydrologic variables necessary for effective and efficient monitoring of water resources.

Investigate, evaluate, analyze, study, and model water resources systems. This encompasses inflow forecasting, water management simulations, hydrologic analysis, hydraulic analysis, and applying hydrologic and hydraulic computer models as necessary. (all levels).

Discuss and evaluate results, and provide guidance and interpretations on hydrology, hydraulics and hydrometry to monitoring technologists, engineering staff and provincial partners to ensure the highest quality of information on water resources is communicated effectively. (ENG 03 and 04)

Work environment

The position will contribute to the delivery of the National Hydrological Services by providing water resources engineering and applied science expertise that supports the collection, interpretation and dissemination of standardized water resource data and information in Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to fill positions within Environment and Climate Change Canada across Canada with various tenure(indeterminate, term, deployment, acting, secondment), linguistic and security profiles according to the position being staffed.

Education :

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in engineering with engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience*:

Experience in hydraulic and hydrometric data analysis, review and modelling, and would include experience during academic study.

Experience in conducting hydraulic and hydrometric engineering studies, and for ENG 2 only, would include experience during academic study.

Experience in scientific and engineering field work in streams and rivers and, for ENG 2 only, would include experience during academic study.

Eng-02 - Less than 3 years’ experience
Eng-03 – Minimum 3-5 years’ experience
Eng-04 – More than 5 years’ **recent experience

Asset Qualifications

Education:

Graduation with a higher level degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in engineering, geophysics or other related discipline.

Currently registered as a professional Engineer in Canada.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Experience in managing human and financial resources (ENG4).

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Condition of Employment:

Driver’s license.

Requirement to travel at times for extended periods of up to 2 or 3 weeks.

Requirement to work overtime.

Requirement to work in remote locations and in extreme weather conditions.

Requirement to occasionally undertake field work that will include working in and around water, wading, working on cableways and bridges or on ice.
