AMENDMENT TO POSITION TITLE

Duties

Provide guidance and advice to managers, supervisors, Workplace OHS committees and employees to ensure compliance with Regulations, Policies and the requirements of the Laboratory Safety Program. Provides advice on the management of hazardous products and working with the Workplace OSH Committee ensures these are being handled, stored and disposed of appropriately. Participate as a member of the Chemical Emergency Response Team. Manage the local chemical inventory, radiation safety and respiratory safety programs.

Intent of the process

Immediate staffing need: 1 full-time permanent position.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

Graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in agriculture, biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other relevant discipline OR an acceptable combination of post secondary education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the implementation and monitoring for compliance of health and safety programs and services in laboratory and field environments.
Experience in planning, organizing and overseeing investigations into accident causations and hazard identification.
Experience in workplace inspections.
Experience in inventory management.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in a field relevant to the position.

Courses in occupational health and safety.

Degree equivalency

Experience in monitoring laboratory work for safe practices, procedures and site conditions.
Experience in managing radiation safety programs.
Experience in managing respiratory safety programs.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of general laboratory methodologies, tools, theories, practices and principles.
Knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to health and safety.
Knowledge of accident investigation methods, techniques and practices.
Knowledge of safe handling and disposal procedures for chemicals.
Knowledge of the requirements for and the use of personal protective equipment including respirators.

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid driver’s license
With appropriate safety precautions in place, able and willing to work in laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions.
Under normal safety precautions, able and willing to work with hazardous materials.
Willingness and ability to obtain respiratory program administrator certification.
Willingness and ability to obtain radiation safety officer certification.
