Duties

Cook duties

Food and catering services to a Canadian Coast Guard ship's complement and passengers.

Impotant notice : Assistant Cook and Cook-Deckhand positions accomplish their duties in autonomy, under the supervision of the Commanding Officer, when Cook Steward positions accomplish the following activities in support of a Chief Cook:

Plans the ship's daily menu as well as the cyclical, formal and special occasion menus and modifies menus and recipes to suit the dietary and special needs of passengers and crew.
Prepares and cooks all food. Plans and organizes galley operations, assists in storing of food and maintenance of the galley and its equipment. In addition, ensures a high standard of food safety and sanitation throughout the galley.

For all seagoing duties :

Assists under the direction of the Rescue Specialist in First Aid procedures as applicable to individuals and groups during rescue operations and care for persons on board.

Participates in shipboard emergency and safety drills, firefighting, abandoning ship, man overboard, damage control and other operations such as rescue.

Cook Deckhand specific additional duties

General shipboard maintenance and husbandry, and performance of deck operations as part of work programs aboard a Canadian Coast Guard ship as directed by the Commanding Officer.
Assists in Search and Rescue, Environmental Response, Scientific, Hydrographic, and Fisheries operations.
Assists in loading, stowing, securing and discharging of cargo and supplies, and in delivering equipment and stores ashore.
Assists in the lifting, placing and the maintenance of floating and fixed aids to navigation.
Maintains station/shipboard cleanliness and husbandry, and performs seamanship duties.
Assists with the operation of a variety of winches, cranes, deck machinery.
Assists in the launching, recovery and manning of boats in support of the ship's assigned tasks.

Cook Steward specific additional duties

Food, hotel and catering services for the ship's complement, passengers and guests onboard a Canadian Coast Guard Ship.
Prepares dining room, mess rooms and pantries for food service, serves meals and performs after meal clean-up and participate to the ship storage activities.
Performs hotel services and cleans accommodation and common areas including laundry services in a timely manner.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the Federal Government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians.

As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians.

The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to fill in temporary needs for vessel crew stations in the CCG, in the region of Central and Arctic - St Lawrence sector. We expect the established directory will be used for 2017, 2018 and 2019 with possibility of extension.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:

Successful completion of Vocational diploma (DEP) in cooking or pastry OR College diploma (DEC) in restaurant management and/or Ship's Crew Cook Certification from a recognized educational institution.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Significative* experience in planning and performing food service delivery activities.

*Significant: at least 3 years of employement in the field.

Professional Certification:

Hold Marine Emergency Duties training certificates: Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats and Basic Safety (STCW);
Hold Hygiene and food safety certificate.

Experience:

Experience as a cook on board a Canadian Coast Guard vessel;
Experience as a cook on board a vessel;
Experience as a seaman/seawoman on board a vessel and/or a Training in seamanship from a recognized institute.

Valid medical certificate;
Hold Marine Emergency Duties training certificates: Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats and Basic Safety (STCW). For temporary positions, the candidate has six months from the first day of employment to obtain the certificate and the cost of training is not covered by the employer ;
Agreement to being deployed anywhere in Canada or assigned to different navigation activities ;
Agree to work onboard CCG ships and go to sea for extended periods and work long hours under adverse sea conditions ;
Agree to wear the uniform in the prescribed manner, as well as the mandatory personal protective equipment : For the NEW EMPLOYEES: Employees must purchase protective footwear that meets the CSA standard at their own expense before employment begins ;
Must be willing to take training in respiratory protection and wear a breathing apparatus. In compliance with the rules and instructions regarding the wearing of a breathing apparatus on board CCG vessels, employees must be disposed to achieving and maintaining a non-leaking face piece-to-skin seal with the mask of the breathing apparatus ;
Agree to travel by land, air and water ;
Possess a valid Canadian passport in the case of appointments to vessels governed by this requirement.
