Stands watches and secures navigation of the vessel and the safety of the crew.
Supervises personnel during operations, ensures communication with various parties and the bridge, and directs the handling of mooring lines.
Reports problems with electronic navigational instruments to technical experts.
Records in the log book all information relevant to navigation and writes various program related reports.
Participates in marine aids positioning, inspection, maintenance and replacement operations, ensures the availability and the updating of buoy data files, writes buoy maintenance reports, and up dates the various electronic instruments used for navigation.
Maintains radio communication and provides information related to sound and visual signals to be exchanged, distances to be kept, work procedures and all other relevant information.
Takes charge of a barge or a boat during operations of Coast Guard and Fisheries and Oceans Canada programs.
Leads and/or participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations.
Inspects and cares for shipboard safety equipment.
Keeps navigation charts and publications up to date.
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.
The intent of the process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to staff RELIEF Navigation Officer positions for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Central and Arctic Region - Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Sector.
The first draw from the inventory will occur on May 31, 2017. Any subsequent draw from the inventory will occur annually or as operationally required.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Valid certificate (STCW 95) - TC Watchkeeping mate, near coastal (OOW/OQP Officer in charge of the watch -NC1); or CCG Watchkeeping certificate or higher
Marine Emergency Duties-Advanced Firefighting.
*Note: if you are in possession of the former MED C, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the course listed above
Marine Emergency Duties STCW- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats.

Marine Emergency Duties STCW - Basic Safety.

Valid First Aid Certificate
Valid TC Chief Mate Near Coastal Certificate or higher
3 months experience as a navigation officer
Experience as a watch keeping officer during buoy-tending operations
Experience in pilotage in confined waters, in charge of bridge watch
Various language requirements
Positions located in Québec: French essential and Bilingual imperative (AAA/AAA)

Willingness and ability to go to sea for various lengths of time.
Willingness and ability to travel by land, air and water.
Willingness and ability to work overtime.
Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
Must take training in Respiratory Protection and wear a respiratory protective device. As part of wearing a respiratory protective device while on board CCG vessels, employees must maintain a clean shaven appearance where the face-piece of a respiratory protective device seals to the skin and that no facial hair interferes with the face to face-piece seal on respiratory protective device.
