Intent of the process

The immediate need for this selection process is to staff 3 positions indeterminately.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar indeterminate or specified period employment or acting appointments.

Experience

All Streams:

Experience in the application of standards and best practices pertinent to the maintenance of biological collections;

Experience in data handling and data management;

Experience in the management/supervision of technical support staff.

Education

All Streams:
Graduation with a Master’s or a PhD degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a discipline related to the position

Degree equivalency

Experience

All Streams:
Experience in the management of biological collections

Education

Stream 1: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in plant biology, botany, mycology, taxonomy, or other fields relevant to the duties of the position.

Stream 2: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in horticulture, plant breeding, or other fields relevant to the duties of the position

Stream 3: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in mycology, microbiology, taxonomy, or other fields relevant to the duties of the position

Degree equivalency

Stream 1

Extensive *experience in handling and preserving plant and/or fungal herbarium material

Stream 2

Extensive *experience in clonal propagation, preservation and regeneration of plant material

Stream 3

Extensive *experience in handling, preserving and regenerating fungal isolates

*Extensive experience is defined as the depth and breadth of the experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of various, complex related activities on a full time basis for a period of 2 years.

Knowledge

All streams:
In-depth knowledge of international standards and Canadian acts and regulations applicable to the maintenance of biological collections, the handling of specimens and the sharing of material;

Knowledge of inventory, cataloguing and documentation techniques for the efficient preservation of biological collections;

Knowledge of the major issues that can affect live or preserved collections (for example: identity preservation, contamination, pests and pathogens, etc.) and current methods for addressing them;

Stream 1: In-depth knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of botany and mycology with a focus on subject matters such as taxonomy, phylogeny and bioinformatics

Stream 2: In-depth knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of clonal propagation, plant physiology and genetics

Stream 3: In-depth knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of mycology with a focus on subject matters such as taxonomy, phylogeny and bioinformatics
