Duties

Operates a variety of motorized equipment including heavy equipment mobile cranes, crane trucks, scissor lift trucks, bucket trucks, front-end loaders, excavators, backhoes, volumetric concrete trucks, highway tractor-trailers, overhead cranes, forklifts; various CCG small vessels including RHIs and Seatrucks; transportation vehicles including ATVSs; and snow removal equipment including snow blowers, small trucks with plows, or salt/sand spreaders involved in maintenance at the Base or at field sites, in the delivery of life cycle maintenance to the civil assets of Marine and Civil Infrastructure.

Operates the high pressure washing, sandblasting and specialized painting equipment to refurbish steel aids to navigation (buoys) and other assets.

Assists in hoisting operations; secures loads and provides signals to the heavy equipment (crane) operator or helicopter pilot.

Carries out new construction or repair maintenance of civil asset infrastructure including but not limited to lightstations, storage or equipment buildings, landings, wharves, hoists, domestic potable water/sanitary systems and other structures. Assists in the construction and erection of aluminum, wooden or galvanized steel towers or other structures at the Base and remote field sites.

Participates in the maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment at the Base or on remotely located aids to navigation, Marine Communications and Traffic Services sites, lightstations and domestic facilities by assisting individuals from different trades in conducting general inspections, reporting on equipment malfunctions, performing emergency repair and provides support of handling of contaminated/hazardous materials.

Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools, including specialized equipment used for hoisting or moving assets, rock drilling, concrete mixing, excavation, or carpentry. Measures chain and selects anchors to be deployed with floating aids.

As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

The pool of successful candidates may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada, including Canadian Coast Guard, across Canada. There is an immediate need to fill one, indeterminate vacant position in Prescott, ON and one indeterminate vacant position in Parry Sound, ON. One additional vacancy in Parry Sound, ON is anticipated in the future.

Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience

Degree equivalency

Valid Class A Ontario driver's license with an airbrake "Z" endorsement (or equivalent)

Certificate for the operation of a Mobile Crane **
** Candidate must possess, as a minimum, a Mobile Crane Operator Certificate 0-8 ton (MTUC Module Program 930030) or equivalent MTUC certification deemed acceptable to the assessment board.
** This program requires a Hoisting Engineering - Branch 2 trade designation, Ontario College of Trades. Candidates not in possession of this (or senior) designation will have 12 months from the date of appointment to obtain certification by completing the Provincial DOST (Demonstration of Skills Test). Employment may be terminated if the Candidate is unsuccessful in obtaining the certification by the agreed upon date.

Experience in the operation of a heavy truck and tractor-trailer.

Experience in the provision of maintenance work and assistance to different trades involved in the installation and maintenance of equipment and systems

Experience in the operation of light motorized equipment such as forklifts, utility tractors/excavators, all-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), loaders, snow-removal equipment and overhead cranes and other similar material handling equipment involved in maintenance activities.

Experience operating a mobile crane*
*Minimum of 1,000 hours experience in the past five years operating a mobile crane
*Candidate will need to provide proof that they have a minimum of 1,000 hours operating a mobile crane prior to appointment (e.g. log books, reference checks or any other acceptable means)
