The Commissioner of Official Languages is mandated by Parliament. He is therefore independent from the government, but his staff are members of the federal public service and benefit from all the related advantages, including flexible work, competitive salaries and professional development.
The OCOL is a small organization of less than 200 employees that offers a positive, collaborative and bilingual work environment. We have our own internal compensation and benefits Advisors and a dedicated information technology team.
FLEXIBLE WORK MODE:
The organization has put in place a hybrid workplace focusing on a flexible work approach. The OCOL offers a hybrid and flexible work model as part of its work environment, depending on the nature of the work required by the position and operational needs.
As part of this process, the position to be filled is located in Gatineau. Candidate appointed will be required to report to the designated work location in accordance with the Common Hybrid Working Model for the Federal Public Service
(https://www.canada.ca/en/government/publicservice/staffing/common-hybrid-work-model-federal-public-service.html) and the Organizational Guidelines for Telework.
The eco friendly building is located at 30 Victoria Street in Gatineau, Quebec, and is close to public transit, parking, bike and walking paths, shops and services. The building also offers indoor bike storage and changing rooms with showers.
There is currently a need to staff one position on an determinate basis.
A pool of qualified candidates resulting from this process may be established and used to fill this position and similar positions with various language requirements, security requirements, conditions of employment, locations and durations. All federal organizations listed in Schedules I, IV and V of the Financial Administration Act may use this staffing process to appoint a candidate to its organization in a similar position if a pool is created with the approval of the manager in consultation with Human Resources.

EDUCATION
Bachelor of Law Degree from a recognized university
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Membership in good standing in the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada
EXPERIENCES
Work experience as a jurist in the legal field for at least 5 years.
Significant experience in drafting legal documents (such as, but not limited to, legal opinions, memoranda, draft decisions or orders, legal reports, or other similar legal documents).
Experience in the field of language rights acquired either as a lawyer working in the specialized field of langue rights, or as a lawyer working in an administrative or quasi-judicial tribunal, a Court or a commission.
* “Significant experience” refers generally to experience of more than three years.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Significant experience working with external stakeholders in areas of law relevant to the mandate of the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada.
Experience in litigation before federal courts in the area of language rights law.
Experience working in an administrative tribunal, in the office of an Agent of Parliament or an Officer of Parliament.
