Duties

This competition will be used to fill positions at the following locations:

Banff East Gate: The Banff East Gate is a fast-paced and exciting work environment situated at the eastern border of Banff National Park. Often the first point of contact for visitors, staff at the Banff East Gate use a Point of Sale device to sell a variety of national park passes and provide essential information to contribute to visitor use, enjoyment, and appreciation. This role involves handling cash and card transactions, and properly accounting for revenue received. Staff have the opportunity to experience some of Banff’s most historic heritage buildings.

Campgrounds: Visitor service, revenue collection and daily cleaning/maintenance at campgrounds & day use areas to enhance the visitor’s experience. This includes but is not limited to greeting visitors and providing orientation, information and direction; confirming reservations; selling of campsites; daily cleaning of campground washroom and other facilities, day use area washrooms/pit privies, campsite cleaning/maintenance, grounds cleaning and litter picking and emptying of trash and recycling receptacles.

Mobile Gate and Information Team: Banff Mobile provides seasonal traffic management, visitor services, revenue collection, and site cleaning and maintenance at key trailheads and day use areas in Banff National Park. The work is active and takes place outdoors in all weather conditions. Staff work on their feet and may expect physical take-down and set-up of traffic and information tent equipment each day. Staff provide detailed information to the visiting public on national park rules and regulations, as well as safety information regarding closures or restrictions at popular sites. The work also involves educating the public on the national park pass program and performing regular compliance duties. The ability to communicate effectively while demonstrating tact and professionalism is a key requirement of this role.

Visitor Centres: Visitor Centre staff provide comprehensive information to the visiting public on a wide variety of topics related to park orientation, backcountry camping, hiking, and park rules and regulations. Strong knowledge of Banff National Park and the surrounding area is necessary this position, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Staff handle high volumes of in-person, email, and phone interactions. The work includes operating a Point of Sale to sell park passes and retail merchandise. The ability to use various computer programs and spreadsheets is required. Backcountry camping knowledge and/or prior experience working with reservation systems are considered assets in this role.

Visitor Services Lead Hand: Takes the lead as a member of a work crew; communicates what has to be accomplished; identifies tools and material to be used; sets the work pace; and explains work to new crew members.

In all positions, occasional facility cleaning and maintenance may be required.

Asset Qualifications:

The following qualifications may be applied and/or assessed because they are beneficial in carrying out the duties of the position. They may be used in screening, assessment or determining right fit for this selection process, so please describe how you meet any of the following criteria.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in handling cash and operating point of sales
• Cleaning and maintenance practices
• Knowledge and/or experience in travelling to backcountry areas in Banff National Park on overnight/multi-night trips
• Tact: Being respectful and polite when dealing with people; understands what to say/not say in difficult situations
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment with frequently changing priorities
• Experience working with computer applications and reservation systems

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Willing and able to work shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime
• Willing and able to perform tasks such as: lifting heavy boxes, picking litter, and site maintenance
• Willing and able to work outdoors and be exposed to various weather conditions
• Make moderate physical effort to sit and stand for prolonged periods and/or clean facilities/grounds
• Be exposed to noxious odours from car fumes; to dust, cleaning products and wet conditions
• Willing and able to demonstrate tasks to others
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Alberta class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
