This position will begin in Sept 2024 and end March 2026. The position will be flexible in time allocation per week, but can require approximately 490 hours between sept 2024 and march 2025, and 450 hours between April 2025 and March 2026. Some work time is expected to be done each week and will require regular meetings with the NRCan manager or delegate.
$12,000 (Student receives $12,000 in 2024-2025 fiscal year and $12000 in 2025-2026 fiscal year. 4 payments of $3000 will be given for 2024-2025 and 4 payments of $3000 for 2025-2026.)

Student position for AI linking of solidification simulation with fatigue life

NRCan seeks an undergraduate or graduate student for a 2 year period between sept 2024 and March 2026 in the space of artificial intelligence, phase field modelling of solidification and data analytics for materials science. The project will focus on developing and utilizing AI algorithms to link simulated solidification microstructures produced by phase field modelling with mechanical properties of in the area of materials science. The successful applicant will be responsible for data preparation, coding and working with researchers to develop algorithms for simulation, data loading/preparation, and machine learning architecting. These developments will be applied to solidification simulation linkages to mechanical properties for application of microstructure to fatigue resistance in hydro based turbines.The student will have to use competency in running grand potential models to generate microstructures and to develop models to link to fatigue life.

Education:
- The Student must be currently enrolled in a Master’s Program at a recognized post-secondary academic institution with specialization in either physics or materials science and engineering. Proof will be required before the start date.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
- Have demonstrated experience, or work product, in applying machine learning or artificial intelligence techniques in the area of materials science.

In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Asset Experience:
- Experience in using repositories to organize and version control scientific code.
- Experience in utilizing machine learning libraries.
