Duties

Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site seeks to fill Interpretation Officer/Coordinator (Indigenous Programs) positions on our Visitor Experience Team. We’re looking for candidates with a passion for Mi’kmaw cultural interpretation and connecting our visitors to the natural and cultural wonders of Kejimkujik! As a member of the visitor experience team, your passion for Indigenous history, culture, and interpretation will contribute to the delivery of engaging memorable, high quality Parks Canada programs, activities, and experiences.

More specifically, Interpretation Officer/Coordinators:

• Create, plan, adapt and deliver cultural interpretive presentations, programs and activities to visitors at Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site.
• Customise programming to a variety of visitors of all ages and origins, relating to the Indigenous (Mi’kmaw) cultural significance of the site;
• Connect visitors with site specific themes and share the stories related to the site in a dynamic and culturally sensitive way to visitors of all ages;
• Assist with Special Events at the site;
• Observe and mitigate any threats to the site, cultural resources, or artefacts, including patrolling Mi’kmaq petroglyph sites.
• Supervise students and Heritage Presenters
• May be asked to deliver programs with very little lead up time

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff future and current vacancies on the interpretation team.

This process is an inventory. We will be extracting the first round of applications for the 2024 operational season on January 14, 2024. If you want to work this upcoming season apply by this date or you may only be considered should we have staff shortages later in the season.

A minimum of 2 years post-secondary education or acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position

Note: Acceptable combination of education, training and experience:

▪ A secondary school diploma or PSC approved alternatives; AND
▪ Successful completion of a minimum of three (3) courses relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Indigenous elders or groups that may include but are not limited to courses in heritage interpretation, communications, public speaking, performing arts).

Degree equivalency

▪ Experience delivering cultural and/or natural heritage programming to groups including children, families or international visitors;
▪ Experience in delivering information to groups in face-to-face situations with the purpose of educating, informing, engaging, entertaining and/or motivating.
▪ Experience in the development of interpretive programs to a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques
▪ Experience in the planning, promoting, and delivery of interpretive events
▪ Experience with audio/visual equipment, computer equipment and software
▪ Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
▪ Experience working with Mi’kmaq communities and/or elders.

• Knowledge of natural and cultural heritage and features specific to Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site
• Knowledge of interpretive theory and techniques such as storytelling, cultural demonstration, dialogic interpretation, theatre programs or guided walks
• Knowledge of the history and culture of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia
• Knowledge of traditional teachings from Mi’kmaw culture

• Adaptability - Adapting in order to work effectively in ambiguous or changing situations, and with diverse individuals and groups;
• Teamwork - Working collaboratively with others to achieve organizational goals;
• Communication through interpretation - listening to others and communicating articulately to inform, influence and involve.

The position requires the incumbent to:
• Work shift-work, and/or evenings, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays;
