Work environment

Correctional Service of Canada is seeking interest from persons looking for an exciting and rewarding career as an Aboriginal Correctional Program Officer.

Aboriginal Correctional Program Officers are essential to fulfilling the Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) mission of contributing to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control. For further information on the department, work environment, careers at CSC and application process, please visit our website found in the link "Correctional Service of Canada" provided above.

Every day, Aboriginal Correctional Program Officers deliver culturally appropriate Aboriginal correctional programs to offenders. They work in partnership with Elders, and collaborate with parole officers. Programs are designed to address, in a culturally sensitive way, behaviours that increase an offender's risk to re-offend. They contribute to the healing journey of Aboriginal offenders. They address the needs identified in offenders' healing plans. They help guide, motivate and encourage Aboriginal offenders along their path to healing and reintegration.

They are responsible for class preparation. They grade offenders' work and formally assess each offender's attitude, accountability and progress.

Aboriginal Correctional Program Officers deliver a range of correctional programs. Some are offered within the institution. Others are offered in the community. They also interact with offenders on a one-on-one basis after classroom hours as necessary.
