-Be recognized as having full-time student status by the post-secondary academic institution at which you are currently enrolled (proof will be required); AND
-Be the minimum age to work in the province or territory where the job is located.

Duties

• Conduct critical analysis in stock assessment data/research
• Participate in science and peer-review meetings in stock assessments
• Defend stock assessment research, internally in DFO and/or externally at conferences
• Produce appropriate documentation of results and findings
• Participate in consultative committees and work with clients and stakeholders

Work environment

Candidates of the program will work in one of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's research laboratories. They will work as part of an assessment team to estimate stock size, productivity and associated uncertainty using ecological concepts and statistical techniques. Candidates will also have contact with members of the fishing industry and non-governmental organisations in the presentation of information leading to advice for fisheries managers.

The Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is responsible for the assessment of more than 155 fish stocks and advice provision for conservation and exploitation of fish stocks. There is a need for more highly qualified experts in this area.

Possession of a bachelor of Science.

Currently enrolled or eligible to enrolled in a Master's Program in a recognized post-secondary academic institution, in one of the following specializations: fisheries science, population ecology or biostatistics.

Degree equivalency

Experience in statistical techniques and use of a statistical and/or programming language (i.e. R programming or a compiled programming language, C++, Java).

Experience writing research reports or technical documents.

Note: In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
