Duties

Cleans and cares for equipment, machinery, and machinery spaces.

Assists in operating, maintaining and repairing ship machinery and equipment.

Performs inspection rounds of the machinery space and tanks.

Maintains an engine room watch.

Assists in maintaining a log of engine room activities.

Participates in the loading, stowage and inventory control of spare parts and supplies.

Participates in fuelling, lube oil transfer and waste oil products handling.

Conducts rigging in support of engine room lifting activities.

Participates in the production, transfer, testing and treatment of potable water.

Carries out fabrication of metal parts and tools.

Participates in damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations.

Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Work environment

A large CCG presence is on the Great Lakes. Operations require individuals to work on either a day boat, live on board vessels up to twenty-eight (28) days at a time or at CG stations up to fourteen (14) days. While onboard the various CG vessels operating on the Great Lakes Canadian Coast Guard personnel deliver programs and services such as search and rescue, marine aids to navigation, marine environmental protection, as well support Government-wide initiatives such as maritime security, science and hydrographic studies.

The intent of the process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to staff RELIEF Engine Room Assistant (Oiler) positions for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Central and Arctic Region, Great Lakes Sector.

Experience in a marine or mechanical environment.

Possession of a diploma related to the domain of the position and issued by a recognized institution, such as welder, machinist, hydraulic/stationary engineer, diesel mechanic.

Degree equivalency

Possession of a valid Transport Canada Engine Room Rating or Engine Room Assistant Certificate.

Marine Emergency Duties STCW - Basic Safety

*Note: if you are in possession of the former MED A1 and B2, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the course listed above

**Note: For temporary positions, the candidate has six months from the first day of employment to obtain the certificate and the cost of training is not covered by the employer.

Certified training certificates - industry related such as Canada Labour Code Part II, OSH, WHMIS, Confined Space Entry.

Valid Marine Advanced First Aid Certificate.

Training in the following areas:
. Rescue Specialist
. Small Craft training or RHIOT

Experience as a watch keeping Engine Room Assistant (Oiler) on a government vessel.

Experience as a watch keeping Engine Room Assistant (Oiler) on a commercial vessel.

Experience in marine mechanical operating systems.

Experience in engine room watch keeping practices.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing to follow the mandatory training related to employment during the rest period.

Possession of a valid driver's licence or personal mobility normally associated with the possession of a valid driver's licence.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Some vessels may require Secret Security Clearance.

Hold a valid Canadian passport.

Valid Health Canada medical or a valid Transport Canada Marine Medical.

Agree to be deployed anywhere in Canada and/or assigned to different navigation activities (missions).

Willingness and ability to go to sea for various lengths of time.

Willingness and ability to travel by land, air and water.

Willingness and ability to work overtime.

Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.

Must take training in Respiratory Protection and wear a respiratory protective device. As part of wearing a respiratory protective device while on board CCG vessels, employees must maintain a clean shaven appearance where the face-piece of a respiratory protective device seals to the skin and that no facial hair interferes with the face to face-piece seal on respiratory protective device.
