TRAINING
Candidates must be willing to undertake training in at the CSC Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Candidates must be willing to relocate if required.

Work environment

Working with women offenders in a correctional environment at a Correctional Service of Canada institution.

The correctional approach in federal institutions for women promotes an open and supportive environment reflective of community living. Its goal is to model, promote and empower women to make meaningful and responsible law-abiding choices with a focus on safe and timely reintegration.

The offender population may include some violent and unstable offenders and some offenders with mental health issues. Offenders may have minimum and medium security ratings.

While on duty, Primary Workers/Kimisinaw must wear the uniform provided by the Correctional Service of Canada and comply with the relevant rules.

Primary Workers/Kimisinaw may be required to periodically travel overnight in the performance of their duties.

NOTE: Primary Worker/Kiminisaw is a Correctional Officer in a women offender institution.
Kimisinaw is the equivalent of a Primary Worker but working at the Healing Lodge.

Intent of the process

A pool of partially qualified candidates will be established for selection to attend the Correctional Training Program (CTP) and the Women Centred Training program (WCT) to qualify for appointment to permanent CX-2 positions.

WAITING PERIOD FOR REASSESSMENT

If you wish to reapply to a Primary Worker/Kimisinaw selection process, the retest period for assessment is 180 days from the date of elimination at either the written exams or interview/reference stage of the process. The retest period for the psychological assessment is 2 years from the date of elimination.

Candidates can only be assessed once in a selection process and if you reapply to this selection process 2016-PEN-EA-NAT-113798, no further consideration will be given to your application.

Please note that if you have previously participated in a Primary Worker/Kimisinaw CX-2 selection process with the Correctional Service of Canada, your results may be applied to the current process. This will be confirmed during the assessment stage of the selection process. You are required to submit an application to this selection process to be considered further.

EDUCATION:
A secondary school diploma, or a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission (PSC) test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or successful completion of a provincially/territorially approved secondary school equivalency test.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
The candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Standard First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) 'Level C' with automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate from a qualified provider approved by any province/territory in Canada, and in accordance with Part XVI of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

The candidate must successfully complete a CSC Correctional Training Program (CTP) and the Women Centered Training program (WCT). There is NO REMUNERATION while on the Correctional Training Program and the Women Centred Training.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or a diploma in a field relevant to the work to be performed.
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or a diploma.
Certification in a field related to conflict resolution, such as mediation, negotiation or alternative dispute resolution.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in direct intervention with adolescent or adult women in a criminal justice or social services environment.

Recent and extensive experience in performing correctional operational duties in a Correctional Service of Canada institutional environment.

Experience working in a correctional, policing, security, military, or emergency response environment.

Experience working with people in conflict with the law.

Experience in working with diversity issues.

Experience in delivering education programs.

Experience in coaching, mentoring, or supervising.

Experience in working in the social services field, such as addictions, mediation, family violence, mental health, crisis centres or shelters.

Experience working with Aboriginal peoples, communities or organizations.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of Aboriginal history, traditions and culture.

ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate orally and/or in writing in a language other than English or French that is reflective of the offender population.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

Employees must be able to work shifts, variable hours, weekends, and statutory holidays.

DRIVER'S LICENCE:
Prior to appointment, candidates must possess a valid unrestricted driver's licence that conforms to provincial or territorial requirements. As a condition of employment, candidates must maintain a valid unrestricted driver's licence throughout employment.

For positions located in the Quebec region: Candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class 4A driver's licence (Emergency Vehicle) granted by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

MEDICAL:

Candidates must also meet the psychological requirements determined by Correctional Service Canada.

Interested candidates must meet each essential qualification to be appointed to the position. A candidate may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

In order to qualify for appointment to a Primary Worker/Kimisinaw position, all candidates must successfully complete and pass the Correctional Training Program (CTP). Aboriginal candidates, may be eligible for an allowance for participation in CTP Stage 3 through either the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) or a local Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASET) stakeholder.
