Duties

Prepares dining room, mess rooms and pantries for food service, serves meals and performs after meal clean-up.

Cleans dining room, mess rooms and pantries and all associated equipment within.

Performs hotel services and cleans accommodation and common areas including laundry services in a timely manner.

Participates in shipboard emergency and safety drills, fire fighting, abandoning ship and other operations such as search and rescue.

Assists in the ship's storing operations.

Assists in the preparation of meals, if required.

Work environment

A large CCG presence is on the Great Lakes. Operations require individuals to work on either a day boat, live on board vessels up to twenty-eight (28) days at a time or at CG stations up to fourteen (14) days. While onboard the various CG vessels operating on the Great Lakes Canadian Coast Guard personnel deliver programs and services such as search and rescue, marine aids to navigation, marine environmental protection, as well support Government-wide initiatives such as maritime security, science and hydrographic studies.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to staff RELIEF Steward positions for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Central and Arctic Region, Great Lakes Sector.

Experience in the hospitality industry, including housekeeping duties and serving tables.

Food Safety Handling Training.

**Note: For temporary positions, the candidate has six months from the first day of employment to obtain the certificate and the cost of training is not covered by the employer.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing to follow the mandatory training related to employment during the rest period.

Possession of a valid driver's licence or personal mobility normally associated with the possession of a valid driver's licence.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Some Vessels may require Secret Security Clearance.

Hold a valid Canadian passport.

Valid Health Canada medical or a valid Transport Canada Marine Medical.

Agree to be deployed anywhere in Canada and/or assigned to different navigation activities (missions).

Willingness and ability to go to sea for various lengths of time.

Willingness and ability to travel by land, air and water.

Willingness and ability to work overtime.

Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.

Must take training in Respiratory Protection and wear a respiratory protective device. As part of wearing a respiratory protective device while on board CCG vessels, employees must maintain a clean shaven appearance where the face-piece of a respiratory protective device seals to the skin and that no facial hair interferes with the face to face-piece seal on respiratory protective device.
