Field seasons vary in length (generally less than 1 month) depending on specific project requirements and may be a requirement for some positions. Field accommodations may be at existing mine sites or in remote locations in tents with rudimentary conveniences; hence a strong desire to experience and enjoy the outdoors is essential. Work conditions will be variable depending on local circumstances. Field work may include foot traverses or work in cores shacks (mine sites); hence a high degree of physical fitness is required. Various modes of transport may include 4x4 trucks, ATVs, helicopters as part of the daily routine.
Lab and office based assignments positions are also possible. They may include geochronology, geochemistry, 3D geophysical modelling, data integration GIS and other support work. GIS may include, database construction and data compilation and management and interpretation in support of improving the geoscience knowledge of ore deposit systems.
Depending on the position, the choice of specializations can be very narrow or very broad. The student should clearly indicate in their cover letter the research areas where they possess knowledge (degree) or experience to allow matching to more specific research positions that may be filled as part of this RAP process

This inventory may be used to staff various full-time and part-time positions in the Research Affiliate Program within Natural Resources Canada with various language requirements, various qualifications and conditions of employment and for various locations. RAP students will be paid through a bursary or by an hourly rate of pay.

Enrolled or willing to become enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution in an undergraduate or graduate program in Earth Sciences, Geology, Geophysics or a related discipline.
The education credential of the applicant (including grades) must be sufficient for admission into a suitable Faculty of Science (or equivalent) and the application must be accepted before the availability date.

Asset Qualifications:
Study/fieldwork experience related to the Earth Sciences.
Knowledge or experience in fundamental geoscience disciplines, such as Geology, Geochemistry, Geochronology, Geophysics, Structural Geology, Tectonics or 3D modelling.
Knowledge or experience or interest in one or more of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative research themes:
. Lode gold ore systems
. Ni-Cr-PGE ore systems
. Porphyry-style mineralisation ore systems
. Uranium-rich ore systems
. Volcanic or sedimentary base metal ore systems
Operational Requirements:
. For some positions, the student must be willing to conduct fieldwork sometimes in remote or isolated areas.
. For fieldwork the student must be able to pass a medical, possess or obtain required first-aid certification, and other safety courses as needed.
. For some positions, the student must be willing to carry out laboratory work and possess or obtain all required safety training.
. The student must be willing to travel to the fieldwork and office work locations of the position.
. Possession of a valid driver's licence
. First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid
. Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)
. Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
Reliability Status security clearance - NOTE: Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.
