Duties

We are seeking a highly motivated M.Sc. student in structural/economic geology to investigate how the geometry of rare metal pegmatites is affected by the lithology and rheology of the host rock into which they are intruded. The position will involve field mapping, sampling, and structural observations, as well as microstructural analyses and geochronology. This study will form part of ongoing research at the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Manitoba into the controls on the distribution and morphology of rare metal pegmatites, with implications for exploration targeting. The candidate will be based at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, and will be expected to regularly attend group meetings, actively collaborate with the research team, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Intent of the process

The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a M.Sc. degree supervised by Dr. Tarryn Cawood at the Geological Survey of Canada (Ottawa) and Dr. Alfredo Camacho at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg).
The duration of the project will be 2 years between 2024 and 2026.

Essential Education:
• Currently enrolled, or willing to enroll, in an M.Sc. program at the University of Manitoba with specialization relevant to the duties of the position.

Essential Experience:
In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities. The successful candidates are expected to have experience in:
• Field-based geological mapping,
• Use of field mapping equipment such as a geological compass and GPS (drone experience will be helpful, but is not required).
• Petrographic descriptions of thin sections.
• Working independently and in teams.

Information on language requirements

Essential Knowledge:
• Basic knowledge of structural geology, particularly in the identification and description of rock deformation fabrics, shear zones, faults, and folds.
• Basic knowledge of mapping software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.

Essential Abilities and Skills:
• Good written communication skills in English.
• Good oral communication skills in English.
• Initiative.

• Willing and able to obtain a medical clearance in accordance with the Treasury Board Occupational Health Evaluation Standard for Scientific Personnel - Field.
