Through the Emerging Professionals Program and with guidance from senior staff, the Assistant Conservation Scientist will:
- Undertake scientific analysis of works of art and heritage objects to determine their chemical composition and identify possible degradation issues;
- Participate in research projects on topics related to heritage conservation and conservation science;
- Provide technical advice and scientific analysis reports to heritage clients on behalf of the Canadian Conservation Institute.
The Conservation Science Division works with heritage professionals across Canada to answer a wide range of scientific questions relating to heritage objects and collections. Through applied research and scientific services, our activities include:
- Understanding, evaluating and improving new conservation treatments and materials;
- Scientific photo-documentation;
- Analysis of heritage objects;
- Aging and deterioration studies;
- Development of new analytical methodologies.
We strive to contribute to the knowledge, the accessibility and the sustainability of heritage collections in Canada.

The need is to staff the position of Assistant Conservation Scientist on a temporary basis for 1 year.

Education (Essential qualification).
1. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, archaeology or some other science relevant to the position.
Note.
1. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
Experiences (essential qualifications).
1. Experience in using analytical instrumentation for the chemical or physical analysis of materials.
Some examples may include:
- Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy;
- Scanning electron microscopy /energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS);
- Raman spectroscopy
- X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF);
- X-ray diffraction (XRD);
- Optical microscopy;
- Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or others.
2. Experience in the interpretation of results from the chemical analysis of materials for the elucidation of chemical composition or structure.
Some examples may include:
- Determination of functional groups from FTIR spectra;
- Determination of elemental composition from SEM/EDS;
- Identification of crystalline components from XRD patterns;
- Determination of chemical composition from GC-MS chromatograms and mass spectra.
Note for all experiences:
Experience may have been acquired through professional work or academic studies. For example, laboratory components of courses in the Bachelor’s degree program, summer research internships, etc.

1. Experience in undertaking scientific research, either as a stand-alone project or as a contribution to a larger project.
This can include project design, proposal, experimentation, analysis and interpretation of results.

Operational Requirements.
1. Willingness and ability to work a minimum of 4 days per week in-person in the office to perform the duties of the position.
2. Willingness and ability to occasionally work off-site.
3. Willingness and ability to work in a laboratory space where exposure to chemical vapors, fumes, odors or dust may occur, resulting in mild discomfort.
