The successful candidate will split work between the laboratory and the field. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Developing analytical methods to measure veterinary-use drugs related to cattle feedlots using LC-MS/MS
• Developing extraction methods to extract vet-drugs from water, soil, cattle manure, and air samples
• Organizing and planning controlled feedlot studies at the LeRDC Research Feedlot and complimentary lab studies to characterize the behaviour of the target compounds
• Water, soil, manure, and air sampling in the field
• Processing and analyzing samples
• Collate and analyze collected data
• Protocol development and troubleshooting
• Communicating scientific results via presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed manuscripts
The Lethbridge Research & Development Centre (LeRDC) is one of the largest within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The Centre has 46 Research Scientists plus support staff. Research is grouped in the areas of environmental health, bioproducts and bioprocesses, sustainable production systems and food safety and nutrition. LeRDC has excellent laboratory and farm facilities, including a research feedlot.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team in the environmental and analytical chemistry laboratory run by Dr. Jonathan Challis. Challis’ research program focuses on understanding the environmental fate and effects of agriculturally-related contaminants using an array of environmental sampling and analytical tools. A core focus of the program is the use of liquid and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry techniques to develop novel multi-residue methods to measure relevant compounds. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Challis.

Education*:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a MSc or PhD program at a recognized post-secondary academic institution with specialization in Environmental/analytical chemistry or Environmental sciences.
*Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.
Experience:
Experience* in laboratory techniques and procedures related to analytical and/or environmental chemistry.
Experience* with field sampling.
*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
