Duties

The candidate will support the Research Development and Technology Director's Office as a Policy Advisor in carrying out his/her mandate. Tasks include:

• Writing policy papers, policy-related briefings and presentations on complex issues;
• Communicating and collaborating with colleagues from across the department to advance science, innovation and regulatory policy priorities;
• Preparing responses and recommendations to senior management;
• Drafting documents, including briefing notes, developing presentations;
• Contributing to scientific files;
• Engaging in strategic foresight exercises and other future-thinking processes to support medium and long-term policy development;
• Initiating and maintaining effective networks of expertise within the directorate, region and across the department;
• Stakeholder engagement.

The candidate will work collaboratively and in support to other members of the management team in other regions and directorates.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: one (1) permanent full-time position to be filled in Lethbridge (Alberta), Lacombe (Alberta) or Beaverlodge (Alberta).

*Note that as of April 1, 2023, AAFC employees are required to work on-site at least two (2) days per week or 40% of their work week.

A pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the locations indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in economics, sociology, or statistics.

Notes: Candidates must always have a degree. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and may have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization. The specialization may also be obtained through an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

*AAFC has established the minimum course requirement is two full courses in economics, sociology or statistics.

Degree equivalency

• Experience conducting analysis of strategic issues and presenting options and recommendations to support senior management decision-making.
• Experience developing strategic approaches in a complex environment and providing advice on optimal processes to achieve them.
• Experience preparing written reports, presentations or other written briefing material for senior management.
• Experience working with tools, techniques and/or methodologies for analyzing data or information.
• Experience managing conflicting priorities across various concurrent responsibilities, and producing results under tight timelines.
• Experience working in multidisciplinary teams with diverse reporting relationships.

• Experience working with agriculture sector stakeholders such as industry, academia, federal government departments/agencies, provincial government departments, or national or international organizations.
