Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is looking for a Lead Hatchery Management Biologist (BI-03) to manage all unit staff and operations at the Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility. Principally, Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility operates a captive breeding program designed to maintain the genetic diversity of Atlantic salmon populations of conservation concern in the Maritimes Region. The successful candidate for this position will:
• manage all operations and maintenance at the Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility
• manage a staff complement ranging from ~4-6 full-time, seasonal, and part-time employees
• work closely with DFO Science staff colleagues, academia, indigenous organisations, non-governmental organisations, industry and other stakeholders on collaborative initiatives associated with Atlantic salmon conservation
• provide information and advice to DFO Science staff colleagues on operational and scientific matters related to activities associated with Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility.

This appointment process will initially be used to staff one position in Coldbrook, NS. The assessment board may create a pool (i.e. list) of fully or partially qualified candidates which may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent or temporary basis within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in land-based fish husbandry (e.g. supplementation, commercial aquaculture, research, or conservation-focused fish hatchery setting).
• Experience in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of finfish diseases.
• Experience recognizing and identifying the external or gross signs of more common fish diseases and parasites.
• Experience with development and adherence of biosecurity practices.
• Experience managing finances and human resources in an operational environment.
• Experience in developing standard operating procedures and safety protocols.

• Knowledge of finfish nutrition and/or diet management for fish health.
• Knowledge of water quality parameters required for finfish rearing.
• Knowledge of finfish physiology as it pertains to practical fish culture management.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a masters degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
• Experience in finfish pathology and diagnostics.
• Experience in examinations for bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, other parasites and noninfectious diseases using a variety of laboratory techniques.
• Experience with Canadian Council of Animal Care applications or protocols.
• Experience working with Indigenous organizations.
• Experience in land-based salmonid fish husbandry (e.g. supplementation, commercial aquaculture, research, or conservation-focused fish hatchery setting).
Reliability Status security clearance
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Health Canada medical.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Willingness and ability to work in remote field sites during inclement weather conditions.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime, and be available for rotating standby as needed.
• Willingness and ability to travel.
