Duties

Support the ongoing operations of the salinity greenhouse by:
• Monitoring greenhouse conditions for abnormalities, and reporting these back to the Research Assistant and Lead Biologist (too hot, too cold, unusual noises, irrigation irregularities, disease, pests),
• Cleaning and sanitizing greenhouse rooms and hydroponic sand systems
• Mixing fertilizer and salts at the appropriate rates as directed by the Research Assistant and/or Lead Biologist,
• Maintaining consistent fertilizer and salinity concentrations and levels in designated tanks,
• Supporting the Research Assistant and Lead Biologist in Integrated Pest Management,
• Mixing and applying pesticides as directed by the Research Assistant and Lead Biologist
• Assisting with general greenhouse duties, such as temperature changes, supporting greenhouse users, and organizing/ taking inventory,
• Assisting with data collection and harvest activities in the greenhouse and field
• Performing minor mechanical repairs on greenhouse infrastructure

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience working in a greenhouse
Experience in detecting signs and symptoms of crop stress, pests and diseases.
Experience using office software applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel)

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

ASSET EDUCATION
Diploma or Degree from a recognized Post-Secondary institution with acceptable specialization in agricultural or environmental sciences related to the operation of, and care of plants in a greenhouse or growth chamber setting.
Successful completion of additional courses or certifications related to greenhouse operations.

Degree equivalency

ASSET EXPERIENCE
Experience in two or more of: cultivating, propagating, maintaining and harvesting research plant material in greenhouses and growth chambers.
Experience in performing dosage and dilution calculations for preparing pesticide and fertilizer solutions.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of greenhouses, growth chambers and associated equipment.
Experience in the operation of Argus Greenhouse Control systems.
Experience in the operation of GE windows based Cimplicity and Proficiency Machine Edition.
Experience in integrated pest management in a greenhouse setting.

Possession of a valid, class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.

Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).

Ability and willingness to work in laboratory, greenhouse and field environments.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides under appropriate safety protocols.
