• Carry out fundamental biochemical techniques (e.g. protein purification, X-ray crystallography).
• Carry out fundamental microbiological techniques (e.g. culturing strains, media preparation, transformations).
• Independently troubleshoot and modify experimental protocols, read scientific literature to solve problems.
• Must document, interpret, and report experimental data.
The London Research and Development Centre (London RDC), located in London ON, was established in 1951. It is one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) network of 20 research and development centres. The research site conducts research in the areas of air, water, and soil, development of sustainable and profitable crop production systems for field crops, and integrated pest management in the heart of one of the most intensive, diverse, and productive Agri-food regions in Canada. Day-to-day hands-on research work will be conducted at London RDC.
The position described here is focused on the identification and characterization of novel microbes and enzymes capable of degrading mycotoxins and other environmental contaminants. These microbes and enzymes can be used as tools to potentially remediate contaminated feed. The student will develop skills in biochemistry (protein purification, proteomics), structural biology (X-ray crystallography), microbiology (culturing, media preparation), molecular biology (PCR, genome sequencing), and mass spectrometry.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Master’s or PhD program at a recognized postsecondary institution with specialization in Biochemistry.
Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and the student must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term. The student should meet the eligibility requirements to enroll at the University of Western Ontario.
Experience:
Experience* working in a wet-laboratory setting in fields that include, but are not limited to: biochemistry (enzyme identification and characterization), microbiology (culturing microbes), or molecular biology (PCR, genome sequencing).
*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
