📣Your application may be used in the assessment of your ability to communicate effectively in writing; however, the Competencies criteria listed below will be assessed at a later date, after initial screening of applications.
A random selection or a top-down approach based on experience, assessment results and/or selection decision, may be used at any point during this process, in order to determine the number of candidates to be further considered.
The Mechanical Technician position is within the Integrated Technical Services (ITS) branch of the Canadian Coast Guard. As a Mechanical Technician, you will perform maintenance on a large variety of tools and infrastructure. Your duties may also include the following:
- Maintain equipment used in Environmental Response Actions and Initiatives
- Replace and maintain backup generators at remote sites
- Travel to remote sites using helicopter, side by side, skidoo and/or boat
- Maintain and refurbish lights at our remote fixed navigational aids (approximately 800 sites from St. John’s to Nain)
- Collaborate with our unique team of professionals that are relied on to ensure the safety of mariners in the Atlantic provinces
- Utilize the latest safety equipment and training

There is an immediate need to staff one position located in St. John’s, NL.
A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar or lower level positions with various tenures within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in the Newfoundland and Labrador region.

Education:
• A secondary school (high school) diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience
Occupational Certification:
• Possession of a valid Inter-Provincial Journeyperson Certification as a Heavy Duty Automotive Mechanic or as an Automotive Service Technician.
Experience:
• Experience in the provision of maintenance work and assistance to different trades
• Experience working in an operational site where multi-trades are working simultaneously
• Experience in field/remote site operations dealing with diesel engines
Asset Occupational Certification
• Valid Fall Protection Certificate
• Valid Rope Access Certificate
• Valid Marine Radio Operator’s License
• Valid Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate
• Valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate
• Valid First Aid Certificate
• Valid General Rigger Certificate
• Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certificate
Asset Experience
• Experience in working with helicopters for transportation, construction activities and or logistic support
• Experience using Maximo
• Experience with backup power systems (such as generators and/or transfer switch systems)
English essential

• Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment that apply at a work site
• Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used in an industrial operations environment
