For the Department of Justice and under the supervision of the tutor, participates in the provision of legal services related to the commercial and real property transactions to Government of Canada departments, Crown corporations and agencies or its legal services units in providing legal advice, support to the client department’s mandate and litigation support.
Perform, amongst others, the following activities in order to assist the notaries or legal advisors of the Directorate:
• Draft and examine legal documentation as well as prepare briefing memoranda and varied correspondence.
• Interpret various types of agreements or contractual clauses as well as draft related legal opinions.
• Research points of law and prepare legal opinions concerning federal and provincial laws and regulations, the civil law of Quebec and federal government policies.
• Perform title searches in land registry offices and draft title reports relating to immovables properties; examine the register of personal and movable real rights and draft reports on the status of registered movable rights.
• Participate, with the notaries or legal advisors, in negotiation meetings with representatives of the federal government and of the private sector within the context of the execution of their mandates.
• Participate in the execution of mandates entrusted to representatives of the Department of Justice.
A pool of partially/fully assessed candidates will be created to staff articling positions primarily at the Department of Justice Canada in the National Capital Region of Ottawa.
Once initial appointments are made, the pool of qualified candidates could be made available for articling positions within other Federal government organizations (departments, agencies, crown corporations, various tribunals under the umbrella of the Administrative Tribunals Support Service of Canada, etc.).
Appointments resulting from this process will be made under the Justice Canada LP-01 Training and Development Program. This program provides for the progression of participants from LP-00 (articling student - Notarial Law ) to LP-02 (Notary) over approximately 5 years. As such, it is expected that an initial appointment to this program would ultimately result in an indeterminate non-advertised LP-02 appointment (subject to meeting all program requirements).

EDUCATION :
Eligibility to the notary internship in accordance with a Master of Laws degree (LLM) in Notarial Law from a recognized university, at the latest on August 1st, 2024. (The articles aimed by this recruitment will begin in August or September 2024).
Bachelor of Law, or licence in Quebec Civil Law from a recognized university.
If you have done your studies outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas assessed against Canadian education standards. This will enable you to provide proof of Canadian equivalency when applying for a job in the public service. The public service will accept any Foreign Educational Credentials as long as they are deemed comparable to Canadian standards, through a recognized credential assessment service.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Experience related to commercial and real property law, title searches, legal research, drafting and examining legal documents and Quebec civil law.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Candidates must be willing to be present at the designated workplace on a regular basis and as required by operational needs.

A written test may be administered.
Any information obtained throughout the selection process, from the time of application to close of process, may be used to evaluate the candidates.
Due to the number of applicants and the strict deadlines, it may be necessary to impose a limit on the number of applicants to be interviewed and proceed to the next step in the selection process (top down selection).
Candidates may be required to meet the asset qualifications or the organizational needs, depending on the requirements of the specific position being staffed.
Other qualifications may be used at the selection decision stage.
