Duties

• Carries out and conducts agricultural research activities under a variety of lab and field conditions to evaluate crop production best management practices.
• Contributes to the development of new knowledge and technology in crop production.
• Organize experiments and assist in planning and troubleshooting including troubleshooting of equipment.
• Collect and analyze data, interpret results, and assist in the preparation of reports.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: 1 full-time permanent need.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures as well as various linguistic requirements.

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution specializing in agricultural science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or another related discipline; OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience for the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
-Experience in conducting laboratory and field experiments.
-Experience in operating basic farm machinery and basic laboratory equipment.
-Experience collecting and analyzing soil and plant samples.

EDUCATION (ASSET):
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in agriculture, biology, chemistry, environmental science or other science relevant field to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE (ASSET):
-Experience providing technical support for projects in a field and laboratory environment.
-Experience in trouble-shooting scientific equipment or field monitoring equipment.
-Experience applying agrochemicals to research field plots.

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid class 5 Prince Edward Island driver’s license.
Ability and willingness to obtain a valid PEI Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.
Ability and willingness to travel.
Ability and willingness to work in the field under variable weather and field conditions.
Ability and willingness to work overtime (including evenings and weekends).
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting objects (up to 20 kg).
Ability and willingness to work where there is a potential exposure to agrochemicals, toxic laboratory reagents and other allergens.
