Under the supervision of a research scientist, the incumbent will conduct research in probiotic studies for pathogen control to improve animal gut health and production. The successful student is expected to contribute to experimental design, conduct lab experiments, collect, analyze, and interpret results and data, prepare and present reports and manuscripts.
The research is conducted in a certified level-2 pathogen laboratory located at the Guelph Research and Development Centre – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Guelph, On) under a team setting.
The project aims to identify probiotic bacteria and their bioactive components that are able to control Clostridium perfringens in poultry and to determine their molecular mechanisms for the control.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a PhD program at a recognized post-secondary academic institution in one of the following specializations: Cellular and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.
Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.
Experience:
Experience* with lab research in the following fields:
1) gene cloning and expression in both G-negative and G-positive bacterial systems, PCR, and recombinant protein production,
2) protein purification, column chromatography, and SDS-PAGE,
3) handling bacterial pathogens.
*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
