The Buildings and Renewables Group (BRG) at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa is seeking qualified candidates to work on research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities related to renewable heat and power and building energy systems. The CanmetENERGY-Ottawa laboratory facility is located in Bells Corners, in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. Education:

STREAM 1 (EN-ENG-02)
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, energy engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

STREAM 2 (PC-01)
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

ALL STREAMS
• Experience* in conducting technical analysis or research related to at least one (1) of the following areas:
o solar heat,
o geothermal heat,
o wind energy,
o hydropower energy,
o marine energy,
o renewable heat and energy storage,
o community energy systems,
o combined heat and power systems,
o district energy systems,
o heat pumps,
o renewable energy resource assessment,
o grid integration of renewable energy,
o hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources,
o building enclosures,
o gas-based space or water heating systems,
o electrical systems, or
o building energy modeling and simulation.
• Experience* in project delivery (developing final reports and recommendations).
• Experience* in project management (defining project scope and milestones, scheduling and resources).
• Experience* writing reports.
• Experience* using word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Experience* conducting data analysis, data interpretation and post-processing.

• Graduation with a master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in an engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position
• Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario .

• Graduate degree(s) or other certifications relevant to the duties of the position.
• Certification(s) relevant to the duties of the position.

Experience:

• Experience in carrying out the technical review of renewable energy projects or proposals, or preparation of technical proposals related to renewable energy.
• Experience using or contributing to technical codes, regulations, or standards.
• Experience programming in Python, R, Matlab, JavaScript, SQL, Julia, C, C++, FORTRAN or others.
• Experience in creating or preparing model-based simulations using software such as TRNSYS, RETScreen, System Advisor Model (SAM), Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER), Polysun, EES, GLD, EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, HOT2000 or others.
• Experience in using design software such as Solidworks, Auto CAD or others.
• Experience in using computation fluid dynamics (CFD) software such as Ansys, Star CCM, Comsol, Telemac or others.
• Experience in data science or database management.
• Experience with creating, organizing, manipulating, analyzing and presenting geospatial data and proficiency using one or more GIS software packages (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS or equivalent)
• Experience in conducting engineering or research projects related to clean or renewable energy in remote or Indigenous communities.
• Experience in power systems engineering, transmission inter-connection analysis or capacity expansion modeling.
• Experience with determining and analyzing energy end-use at the building and community scale.
• Experience in setting up data acquisition systems in a field-testing environment.
• Experience in working with or assessing low global warming potential refrigerants for mechanical system performance.
• Experience in applying building science principles to housing or building design or renovation issues.
• Experience in utilizing housing or building energy research findings to develop outcomes appropriate for the housing or building marketplace.
• Experience in designing, planning, and conducting research in the field of river hydrokinetic or tidal current energy areas, or river engineering.
• Experience in assessing resiliency in the built environment related to climate change impacts.
• Experience in conducting analyses involving life-cycle cost, life-cycle carbon, or embodied carbon.
