Intent of the process

Successful candidates will be placed in an SC-DED-02 pool of candidates and may be hired for casual employment for a training program at the SC-DED-02, Seaman/Public Safety Diving Trainee, level in order to obtain the CCG Diver Qualification (course is approximately 3 months in length).

Those successful in completing the training program will be placed in an SC-SPT-03 pool of candidates and may be considered for term or indeterminate appointments to the SC-SPT-03, Public Safety Diver – Deckhand, working level.

ALL STREAMS:
Certification:
ECrt1 Marine Emergency Duties STCW – Basic Safety;
ECrt2 Marine Emergency Duties STCW – Survival Craft;
(Note 1: if you are in possession of the former MED A1, B1, and B2, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the 2 courses listed above. Note 2: If you are enrolled in Marine Basic Safety and Survival Craft courses at the time of your application to this process, and can provide proof of enrollment, your candidacy will be evaluated.
ECrt3 Radio License (ROC – Restricted Operator’s Certificate, or ROC-M – Radio Operator’s Certificate, or ROC-MC – Radio Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial or GMDSS);
ECrt4 Marine First Aid (can be Marine Basic First Aid, Marine Advanced First Aid, Occupational First Aid Level 3, or higher).
ECrt5 Possession of one or more of the following certifications:
- Civilian Recreational Open Water Diver
- Canadian Forces / DND Ships Diver
- Occupational Diver Certification

Experience:
EEx1 Experience with recreational or commercial boating.
EEx2 Experience in recreational, government, or commercial diving.

EAb1 Ability to operate deck machinery and equipment.
EAb2 Ability to swim and function unaided in open water conditions in emergency or stressful situations.
(Note: This will be assessed with a practical exercise in a deep water pool).

Personal Suitability:
PS1 Teamwork

ACrt1 Transport Canada Bridge Watch certificate or Bridge Watch Course from a recognized Marine Training Institute;
ACrt2 Able Seaman’s Certificate, Watchkeeping Mate or higher.
ACrt3 CCG Medic A Certificate, or Occupational First AID (OFA) Level 3.
ACrt4 Transport Canada SVOC Small Vessel Operator Certificate
ACrt5 CCG RHIOT (Rigid Hull Inflatable Operator Training).

Knowledge:
AKn1 Knowledge of Recreational diving practices.
AKn2 Knowledge of Small vessel operations.
AKn3 Knowledge of Marine Emergency and First aid procedures.

• Seafarers Medical (new hires: Transport Canada Marine Medical or Health Canada Periodic III).
• Health Canada Occupational Diving Medical certification as per (OHAG) section 2-VII for shallow water divers.
• Valid Canadian Passport
• Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program – RPP
• Willingness to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
• Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice.
• Must be willing and able to work shiftwork.
• Must be willing and able to travel by air, land, or by sea.
• Must be willing to wear cumbersome heavy weight diving dress including various diving helmets, weighing approx. 60 kgs for long periods while moving across decks and being immersed in cold, sometimes contaminated water, with low visibility conditions.
• Must be willing to obtain DCBC Certification.
• Possession of a valid BC Class 5 Driver's license.
