The Geological Survey of Canada (Delta-Lab, GSC-Québec) and McGill University (Montréal, QC, Canada), invite applications for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) position in the fields of microbiology and environmental geochemistry. Under the framework of Natural Resources Canada’s GEM-GeoNorth program, the student will integrate microbial, biomarker, isotopic and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry data to investigate the release of greenhouse gases and metals in thawing permafrost. This research will involve mostly lab work.

Essential Education:
• The candidate must currently have a master’s degree in microbiology, geochemistry or a related subject.
Essential Experience:
• Laboratory experience.
In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience/knowledge can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
Asset Experience:
• Methods and analytical equipment (e.g., gas chromatography – mass spectrometry) used in organic geochemistry.
Asset Knowledge:
• An understanding of applied isotope geochemistry.

• Reliability Status security clearance - NOTE: Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment.
Therefore, the student will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-related documents.
• The student will need to be enrolled at the McGill University for this PhD degree.
• This PhD is conditional on obtaining funding from the research project.
