Duties

The incumbent will be responsible for implementing the mustard breeding and research programs under the supervision of mustard breeder Dr. Bifang Cheng.

Main responsibilities:
- Conducting condiment mustard (Brassica juncea and Sinapis alba) field trials (nursery, yield trial and Mustard Co-op Test). Work includes seeding field trials, taking notes (flowering and maturity, lodging), combining field trials and cleaning seed samples.
- Collecting agronomic (flowering, maturity, maturity, yield and seed size) and quality (oil, protein, glucosinolate, mucilage chlorophyll and green seed) data and performing statistical analysis on these data.
- Assisting in development of Group II herbicide tolerant condiment mustard varieties including applying herbicide on plant breeding materials in the greenhouse and the field, managing mustard seed inventory and PNT trial.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent is to fill one (1) permanent position in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures.

EDUCATION:
Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in plant science or biology OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Significant* experience implementing plant breeding programs including conducting and evaluating field trials.
Experience collecting scientific data and performing statistical analysis as it relates to plant breeding.
Significant* experience operating small plot research equipment such as tractors, plot seeders and plot combines.

* Significant is defined as > 24 months / 2 full field seasons.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Possession of a valid pesticide applicator certificate of qualification.

EXPERIENCE:
Breeding and research experience with Brassica crops and related species (Sinapis alba).
