Duties

The Mechanical Technician position is within the Integrated Technical Services (ITS) branch of the Canadian Coast Guard. As a Mechanical Technician, you will perform maintenance on a large variety of tools and infrastructure. Your duties may also include the following:
✔️Maintain equipment used in Environmental Response Actions and Initiatives
✔️Replace and maintain backup generators at remote sites
✔️Travel to remote sites using helicopter, side by side, skidoo and/or boat
✔️Maintain and refurbish lights at our remote fixed navigational aids (approximately 800 sites from St. John’s to Nain)
✔️Collaborate with our unique team of professionals that are relied on to ensure the safety of mariners in the Atlantic provinces
✔️Utilize the latest safety equipment and training

Intent of the process

There is an immediate need to staff one position located in St. John’s, NL, and another possible need to staff one position in Saint John, NB.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar or lower level positions with various tenures within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in the Newfoundland and Labrador region, Maritimes region, and the Canadian Coast Guard in the Atlantic Region.

Education:
- A secondary school (high school) diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
- Possession of a valid Inter-Provincial Journeyperson Certification as a Heavy Duty Automotive Mechanic

Experience
• Experience in the provision of maintenance work and assistance to different trades
• Experience working in an operational site where multi-trades are working simultaneously
• Experience in field/remote site operations dealing with diesel engines

• Ability to operate a computer using MS Office software (such as Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer)
