The Characterization Laboratory provides analytical chemistry testing services to support energy related research projects conducted by scientists at the CanmetENERGY research facility in Ottawa. The types of samples analyzed by the Characterization Laboratory include petroleum products, lubricants, bio-oils, coal, coke, combustion residues, biomass, refuse–derived fuels and catalysts.
The Manager, Characterization Laboratory supervises a team of 2 chemists and 6 chemical technologists. Other responsibilities include managing the laboratory’s operational budget, overseeing the acquisition and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, leading method development projects, implementing quality assurance/control measures, and participating in national and international standards organization committee activities.
The position is located at the Bells Corners Complex in the west end of Ottawa and requires on-site presence 5 days per week. A hybrid work schedule is not possible.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in chemistry; or graduation with a degree from a recognized university in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
Experience:
• Experience performing analyses, interpreting results and maintaining equipment used in X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry or Ion Chromatography.
• Experience supervising technologists and/or students in a chemistry laboratory.
Bilingual - Imperative (CBC/CBC)

• Knowledge of chemical standards organizations and standard test methods used in the analysis of petroleum and non-petroleum based fuels.

Asset Education:
Master's degree with specialization in Chemistry.
Asset Experience :
• Experience managing the human and financial resources of a chemistry laboratory.
• Experience working in a laboratory registered to the ISO 17025 or ISO 9001 standard.
• Experience coordinating testing and analyses in a chemistry laboratory.
