Duties

This project involves the study of Quaternary stratigraphy and sedimentology in the Hudson Bay Lowland of northeastern Manitoba. The project aims to contribute to the understanding of regional glacial history with a focus on subglacial dynamics through detailed studies of multiple till sheets. The research will involve description of stratigraphic sections and sampling, measurements of till clast fabrics, various laboratory measurements (e.g., grain size, clast lithology counts), as well as analysis of compositional data (e.g., indicator minerals, sediment geochemistry) to determine sediment provenance (bedrock source regions). The project is part of the GEM GeoNorth Program of the Geological Survey of Canada.

Work environment

The Geological Survey of Canada is part of Natural Resources Canada’s Lands and Minerals Sector. It is a national organization for geoscientific information and research. Its world-class expertise focuses on the sustainable development of Canada’s mineral, energy and water resources; stewardship of Canada’s environment; management of natural geological and related hazards; and technology innovation.

• Currently enrolled or willing to enroll at the University of Waterloo in a Master of Science 'Earth Science' program (Thesis Option).

• Graduation* with a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences or a similar program from a recognized post-secondary institution.
*Candidates must meet all requirements for BSc by April 30, 2023.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

• Fieldwork experience.
• Experience working in a laboratory setting.
