Natural Resources Canada requires an experienced marine technologist to prepare for and participate in, field expeditions. The Marine Geoscience Technologist will prepare, install, repair and operate systems/equipment used in the collection of geophysical, geological and geotechnical data and samples; observe, record, compile and validate technical data; and work independently. The majority of the field work is marine related and involves repairing and maintaining equipment, and preparing equipment, spares and consumables for field surveys from days to weeks in duration.

The immediate need is to staff two (2) positions at the EG-04 group and level located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. One (1) indeterminate (permanent) position and one (1) determinate (temporary) position.
In addition, there is an anticipatory need to staff one (1) indeterminate (permanent) position at the EG-04 group and level, located in Sidney, British Columbia.
A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada at the EG-04 group and level with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profiles (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability Status, Secret), in various locations and with various conditions of employment.

• Successful completion of an acceptable post-secondary training program in mechanical engineering technology, or another field related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
• Experience with the installation, deployment, operation and recovery of marine scientific equipment.
• Experience in installing and servicing a variety of mechanical equipment.
• Experience with geophysical, geotechnical and seabed sampling equipment in a sea going environment.
• Experience working with marine seismic compressed air systems (compressors and guns).
• Experience processing geological/ geotechnical samples at sea (piston core, grabs).

• Knowledge of the safe operation of equipment such as winches, cranes, capstans, sheaves, blocks or lifting tackle.

An interview may be conducted.
A written examination may be administered.
Other sources of information (e.g. performance agreements, work samples, board member knowledge, etc.) may be used to assess the criteria identified on the Statement of Merit Criteria. Recent and past performance agreements may be used as part of the assessment. Please be prepared to provide such documentation should it be requested.
Candidates must meet the essential qualifications to be appointed to a position.
Candidates may be required to meet the other qualifications, depending on the requirements of the specific position being staffed.
