Work environment

As an Electronics Technologist in the Canadian Coast Guard, you would work as part of a skilled team of experts to provide essential, technical support to our Canadian Coast Guard and Fisheries and Oceans Canada clients. You would work off-site, as needed, at Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centers, remote sites and onboard our diverse fleet of CCG vessels. You would support our mandate and promote effective asset management by performing technical tasks such as installing and commissioning new equipment and managing existing equipment through preventative and corrective maintenance. Your support will ensure our department can meet essential, operational requirements.

In this role, you would work on equipment such as:
• Ship and harbour radars
• Gyrocompasses
• Ultrasonic depth finders
• Satellite positioning equipment
• Satellite communications equipment
• Radio telecommunications equipment
• Communication control systems
• Networking equipment
• Public Address Systems and Phone Exchange Equipment

Your work day could involve flying in a helicopter to remote sites to restore service to radio communications, travelling to ship yards to install marine radar systems on Canadian Coast Guard vessels, programming computer network equipment in a workshop and more.

Marine Electronic Development Program
The Marine Electronic Development (MELDEV) Program is a professional development program which provides you with the required skills to be an Electronics Technologist in the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). MELDEVs are typically hired at the EL-02 level and progress to the EL-05 (working level) in approximately three years. To progress through the program, you would need to complete formal and informal training, meet established development goals and consistently demonstrate the required personal suitability’s/competencies. Training would involve on-the-job training/coaching with an experienced Electronics Technologist in your work area, individual self-study packages on Coast Guard electronic equipment, and formal training at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney, NS.

Intent of the process

A fully or partially assessed/qualified pool of candidates will be created and may be used for future vacancies of various tenures (temporary or permanent).

Education:

A secondary school diploma (High School) and completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology* OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience**.

If you do not possess the secondary school diploma (High School) or if you have not completed an acceptable training program in electronics technology, you will be required to describe what education, training and experience you have, in your application package, so the assessment board can determine if it meets their “acceptable combination” requirements.

*An acceptable training program in electronics technology is defined as the completion of a recognized post-secondary program, of at least two years in duration, in the field of electronics technology.

** Acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience is defined as the completion of a recognized post-secondary program for electronics engineering technicians followed by a minimum of five (5) years of on-the-job technical training and experience in informatics, repairs and installation of modems, landlines, navigational, communication, radars and/or sonar equipment OR having achieved the Canadian Forces developmental period two (DP2) in the field of communication, radar, sonar, or navigational systems.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Experience in using a computer and computer software such as word processing software, database software, spreadsheet software and presentation software.

Knowledge of electronics theory used in maintaining electronic equipment and systems in the categories of communications, radars, navigational aids, computers and microprocessor based systems.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

A successful Health Canada pre-placement fitness-to-work assessment is required

Must possess a valid Driver’s License - free of restrictions. Note: New, beginners, graduated or restricted drivers licenses are not acceptable.

Must agree to be deployed anywhere in Canada during the first 7 years of employment including isolated posts (See National Joint Council Directive on Isolated Posts for more info https://www.njc-cnm.gc.ca/directive/d4/en).

Must be willing to work on ships, either in port or at sea.

Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as required, sometimes on short notice, and in a 24/7 operational environment.

Must be willing to travel, sometimes on short notice and/or for extended periods, for general duties, for training purposes, to remote locations and/or to perform work on vessels at sea.

Must be willing to travel by various modes of transportation such as ship, boat, automobile, plane, helicopter, ATV, snowmobile, etc. to perform work at remote locations and/or to perform work on vessels at sea.

Must not be subject to vertigo (climbing and working on towers and ships’ masts), motion sickness or to claustrophobia(fear of confined spaces).
